The War Within Our Bodies
Free Radicals or Toxins that come from: • Stress • Radiation from the sun • Pollution • Toxins in the water • Poor diet
The cells of our bodies are fighting to stay healthy as they are attacked by free radicals.

Free Radicals vs. Antioxidants

FREE RADICALS are atoms with at least one unpaired electron. It needs to stabilize itself by stealing an electron from a nearby molecule. Whatever the free radical touches first (and steals the electron from), is wrecked. If it's the cell wall, the cell dies. If it's the DNA, it causes a mutationthat leads to many diseases, especially cancer. ANTIOXIDANTS are molecules that can donate an electron to another molecule that has an unpaired electron, AKA a free radical.. By donating an electron, antioxidants help stop the chemical reaction called oxidation. Think of rust- that’s an oxidation reaction. So basically, what antioxidants are important for is to help keep your body from rusting (aging).

In vivo, it activates naturally occurring antioxidative enzymes Superoxide dismutase (SOD) to fight oxidative stress. trans-resveratrol would combat this oxidative stress either by neutralizing these free radicals or by repairing damage. trans-resveratrol can neutralize these free radicals by donating an electron or hydrogen atom and itself forming a phenoxy radical which is stabilized by resonance. It is believed that continuous attack of these free radicals on membranes, lipids and other biomolecules is the major reason of tissue damage and hence many diseases resulting in ageing. Thus in this regard trans-resveratrol could prove a great asset to human kind. There is a famous French paradox according to which people in France, in spite of having high fat diet suffer less from coronary heart diseases (CHD) as they take a large amount…

After years of research studying the Free Radical Theory of Aging, Harman revised this theory to incorporate the role of mitochondria in aging. This “mitochondrial theory of aging” (Lee and Wei 2012, Bereiter-Hahn 2014) encompasses the effects of cumulative oxidative damage to mitochondria induced by ROS toxicity in the organism’s lifetime. The reactive oxygen species produced from metabolic respiration are associated with detrimental effects on mitochondrial function. Mitochondrial dysfunction then leads to abnormal amounts of ROS production, which further propagates oxidative…

Another form of cell injury is free radicals and reactive oxygen species. “An important mechanism of cellular injury is injury induced by free radicals, especially by reactive oxygen species (ROS); this form of injury is called oxidative stress” (Heuther and McCance, 2012). Free radicals are produced by cells and are crucial to normal cellular metabolism. Free radicals can form damaging chemical bonds with lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates. The most commonly defined free radicals are the reactive oxygen species (ROS) which contribute to mitochondrial dysfunction and are linked to many human diseases and the aging process. According to a holistic physician, Dr. Jill Marjama-Lyons, “oxidative stress is one of the leading theories as to what might cause dopamine cell death in Parkinson’s disease” (2003).…

In 1956, Denham Harman articulated the free radical theory of aging which states that ‘oxygen free radicals that are formed endogenously in live cells result in a pattern of cumulative damage’(9). The theory is also implied that the target of those radicals in the cellular system is random. In live cells, DNA, protein and lipid are targets for the free radical’s invasion. Damaging any of those vital macromolecules in live cell affects the physiology of the cell and may lead to apoptosis and cell death. Cell injury caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS), radicals such as hydroxyl radical (OH∙) and the nonradicals like hydrogen peroxide H2O2, appears to be a measure contributor for many aging diseases such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular…

Antioxidants are found in food as amino acids, bioflavonoids, carotenoids, vitamins, and minerals. Vitamins A, C, and E are antioxidant powerhouses that prevent as well as clean up free radical damage. For example, vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that prevents oxidative damage in cells, keeping cell walls from breaking down by protecting the essential fatty acids within those cell walls. Vitamin E is best known for protecting skin cells from ultraviolet radiation (UV rays); it also keeps stored vitamin A from…

Once a molecule is oxidized it is called a free radical. Free radicals are unstable and can cause damage to DNA, which will eventually cause inappropriate cell division, which will lead to tumor and cancer development (Murray, 2005). To prevent a buildup of free radicals, antioxidants are vital to one’s diet. Antioxidants can slow or avoid damage from oxidation. Antioxidants can be found solely in plant-based foods.…

Aging, “The accumulation of diverse deleterious changes occurring in cells and tissues with advancing age that are responsible for the increased risk of disease and death.” (Tosato, 401). This major aspect of our life is still a mystery to scientists, however there are many theories behind the process, and reason humans and all living organisms age. Many studies have been performed to understand more about this phenomenon, yet no definitive theory has been stated. Free radical theory has been a popular theory for many years, constantly adapting to the new research found about the life of living, multicellular, organisms.…

Antioxidants work in one of two ways to neutralize free radicals: chain-breaking or chain-prevention. When a free radical steals an electron, a second radical is formed, beginning a chain reaction that will continue to generate unstable molecules until termination occurs—either the free radical is stabilized by a chain-breaking antioxidant, or it eventually decays. Other antioxidants work by scavenging “chain-initiating” free radicals, neutralizing them before an oxidative chain reaction can even begin.…
