San Andreas
The San Andreas movie is a good movie and a nice wake up call for everyone. I’m very thankful that this movie is released in time for the earthquake preparedness of our country. You might get tips on how to survive or maybe get tips on how you can die if you don’t prepare for it.
I watched this film in our classroom during our Science subject. I enjoy ed the movie because everyone shouting “aaaaahhhhh” whenever there’s explosion and destruction hahaha. The action scenes from the screen and it’s a mind blown experience kind of thing haha.
When a muscle man do his job as a fireman and member of a rescue unit, just imagine all the most impossible things that he can do. But that’s how the movie goes, we have a hero that saves the day and then saves his entire family, that’s the focus of this movie if you want to think using the left side of your brain, Just for entertainment purposes, More intensive action to come your way after the opening credits. This is (somewhat literally) a groundbreaking movie and not just because of it has three massive earthquakes rumbling through its duration.
Today, our scientist don’t have yet the right instruments to predict when will the next earthquake to happen, but here in San Andreas movie, they did discover that they can now predict the next big one, its like our local scientist who predicted without accuracy yet that our West Valley Fault will shake us soon. Okay let’s go back to the movie. I enjoyed the destruction here in San Andreas. I like the visual effects that they did here in the movie. There’s a new view on how the destruction and earthquake occur, and it’s the 1st time I see how the entire land of San Francisco movies like a rubber, that’s an awesome view and we wish that we can see that too when we ride a helicopter. The earthquake waves are real and we felt it even before and after the occurrence of the quake, the movie might give a disturbing feeling to people who experience a really bad earthquake in their lives. It’s a scary movie but there’s always a lesson behind it….stay away from tall buildings, don’t use the elevator, don’t panic and don’t look back.

The movie reminds us that we should help people if they need it, survive and use our brains in every split seconds, because when you panic, you seem to forget to watch out for your loved ones. I admit, the movie is amazing. I love watching it.

The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake was one of the biggest earthquakes California has ever had and people are still talking about it today. I have heard a lot about the earthquake and I know that it occurred on October 17, 1989 at 5:04pm and that it lasted 15 seconds. The earthquake was 6.9 on the Richter scale and was caused by a slip along the San Andreas Fault. People felt the earthquake for miles, from north of San Francisco to far below Santa Cruz. The earthquake killed 63 people, injured 3757 people, left 10,000 people homeless and caused over $6 billion dollars of damage. It was a big one!!…

The results of these earthquakes was devastating. Trees were up rooted and looked to be tossed around like toothpicks. There was wide spread damage extending from St. Louis to all the way to Pennsylvania where supposedly the Liberty bell rang from the strong quakes.(Nuttli) Thirty miles south, in the river town of what is today Caruthersville, Missouri, all twenty houses were destroyed, and the surrounding land was rendered almost unrecognizable. The ground rolled in several-foot-high waves until they burst, hurling up geysers of water, sand, and a charcoal-like substance. Giant fissures swallowed buildings, along with anyone inside.…

There are also secondary effects that can be a disastrous to Los Angeles like faulting and ground ruptures, aftershocks, and fires. Earthquakes originate from the sudden movement of faults. As the faults move, in any direction, the blocks of rock on both sides of the fault will rub against each other and that cause the vibrations. The more the faults move, the larger the amount and intensity of vibrations in the earthquake will be. The reason that Los Angeles is prone to an earthquake at any given time is because the center of the city is located directly above a group of thrust faults. These faults occur at convergent boundaries. It is also located closely the fault known as the San Andreas Fault, which has produced some of the largest earthquakes the world has ever seen. Thrust faults can give way to immense pressure, which will cause one slab of rock to push against another slab of rock and ultimately it will push the other plate upward. Earthquakes have devastated Los Angeles in the past. The largest quake in modern history was the Fort Tejon Earthquake in 1857. It measured 8.0 on the Richter scale. Southern California was scarcely populated, so…

On August 25th at six thirty P.M, one of the most devastating natural disasters the U.S had ever seen touched ground in Florida. Hurricane Katrina was a category five hurricane that had made its way to New Orleans by August 29th. This storm was so destructive that not only did it leave a mark in the gulf coast, but it put the whole country into complete turmoil. Spike Lee was one of the first people to try to start a movement and show the country what really happened during this brutal storm. In the film When the Levees Broke, Spike Lee does a fantastic job at using the people of New Orleans to back up his argument that the United States government did not do an effective job at protecting its people during such harsh times. Lee’s background has a tremendous influence towards how he constructed this film. Spike Lee’s film When the Levees Broke sends a very strong message out to his audience and does a great job at stirring up the argument of whether or not the government could have done a more efficient job at taking care of the city of New Orleans.…

San Francisco was a large city of a population of about four hundred thousand. Therefore because the city was so populated it made it harder for people to evacuate. The main source of evacuating people out of the city was a ferry provided for free. Since they didn’t have many freeways and bridges there was not many ways t evacuate beside the ferries. Comparing this to a future earthquake waiting to happen such as the San Andreas fault, it is going to be much more difficult to evacuate when that earthquake hits. The earthquake will destruct many of the freeways, bridges, and on-ramps. Previous earthquakes have shown us that those types of structures are vulnerable to the shaking. This means that trying to evacuate the city by car will be almost impossible and since we are not located right next to the ocean means that evacuating will put us in a dilemma.…

While I am a lover of California and appreciate California from afar, I feel as though we should rethink relocating to California. I feel as though this is the best choice to make due to the fact that the earthquake of 1906 was just only a preview of what the San Andreas Fault can do to San Francisco. Due to my extensive research, I can conclude that; San Francisco is too dangerous for us to move our headquarters to, and I can conclude this due to studying the earthquake of 1906.…

Los Angeles was built on a myriad of transform faults that include Santa Monica fault, the San Fernando fault, and Northridge/Santa Barbara fault. Even though these faults are not as well-known as the San Andreas Fault, where it margins are between the Pacific and North American plates that cross Southern California. Los Angeles is sitting near at least 60 known faults. The earth still moves frequently in these smaller less known areas. One example of this is the earthquake that was focused in the Northridge area happened in January 1994. It only lasted 30 seconds registering at 6.7 on the Richter scale but the aftershocks lasted for several days afterwards. Ground displacement is the second hazard main of earthquakes. Especially if there is a building or roadway on or near the fault line. This quake alone killed 60 people, and injuring thousands. It also caused fires and an explosion in the Granada Hills area, causing many buildings and freeways to collapse. There were also many homes left without power or water.…
