A bell chimed as a customer entered the store. He was dressed in all black, jeans and a hooded jacket. I watched him suspiciously as I scanned a pack of cigarettes.
“That would be 18.89”
Taking my eyes off of the hooded figure, I accepted the cash from an Asian man. The cash register clattered as my fingers picked out the change needed. The man took the return and began to walk away.
“Thank you,” I muttered.
With nothing to do, my eyes searched and locked onto the hooded figure standing in the beverage section. I cautiously watched him as he pulled out a large energy drink can from the fridge and headed straight towards me.

My monitor was flooded with icons and windows, most of them being video games. I saw some of my favorite simulation and rpg games but they seemed vastly inferior compared to what I was preparing for. The chair squeaked as the weight shifted.
“Just 1 more hour till I can enter.”
I reached over and pulled out a small, black disc. It was an instruction hologram that came with the pod. It’s smooth, engineered surface felt cool to touch. My fingers eventually tapped on the touch surface. Although I had watched the program over 50 times, I couldn’t help but smile as a 3-dimensional figure of the pod rotated.
The game was named Unparalleled. It was a fantasy role-playing game. That’s it. That is all Virtualis told us about the game. Under normal circumstances, this would be unacceptable but the sheer idea of true Virtual Reality was too irresistible. Of course the free cost helped. As for the schematics of the device, there was only one tidbit that I didn’t mention before. There was a 6:1 virtual world to real world time ratio, respectively. This meant that I could play for even more than I could physically.
It was everything I could ever want.
