Reaction Revealed In Three Wise Guys

A Response to a gift is dependent on the person receiving the gift and the situation. This concept of receiving presents and the reaction created, is explored in the two stories, Three Wise Guys by Sandra Cisneros and The Gift Of The Magi by O. Henry. Similar in theme the two stories have different situations when the gifts are presented. This makes the reaction of the main characters also differ in intensity of gratitude. A huge box arrived at the home of The Gonzales family of the Three Wise Guys. The package provoked gratefulness and extreme excitement. Since the present was not to be opened until The Day of the Three Kings. There was much build up to what the actual present was going to be. The family fantasized what was going to be in the large mysterious box. The mother wanted a washing machine; the daughter wanted dolls and toys to enjoy. The boy Ruben was dreaming of there being a bike in the box.
The initial reaction of the family was disappointment and ungrateful for what they saw was a full set of junior encyclopedias. Regardless of their disappointment the family started using the books as tables and chair boosters. The daughter even colored the woman in the books and made a spiral staircase for her dolls. The boy Ruben did not touch any of the books, until his mother placed one of the books on the kitchen table. Curious the boy opened the book to find a picture of a dog in a spaceship, which sparked his interest. From this point on Ruben found much excitement in reading and was the sole person who showed gratefulness and appreciation for the gift. Presents are also exchanged in The Gift Of The Magi by the husband and wife. Della the wife in the story was anxious for what she was going to give her husband for Christmas.
