As Amari’s journey continued, she was forced to experience unexpected tasks when being at the Derby’s. It took Amari a while to recover from the pain Mr.Derby put her in. Many thought his violent actions towards her were unreasonable, but no one dared to stand against him. Her biggest fear was to work in the rice fields. Once she recovered, she was put back to work and wishing that her owner would not notice her. Soon she was discovered and was put to help delivery Mrs.Derby’s baby. Amari was calm, but Mrs.Derby was full of fear. When the beautiful baby was born, she knew why Mrs.Derby was afraid of. The baby was black, but Amari ignored that and admired her beauty. Amari tried to save the baby’s life but she couldn’t do anything. The baby and the father, Noah ended up dying right in front of her. All she could do was sob because death was everywhere in her life. They’re are planning going to sell her and her friends expect Teenie. Soon one of the oldest slaves named Cato came with helpful advice. He said how going to the South is the best way to be set free, but it’s a …show more content…
difficult challenge to get there. Amari was unsure what is going to happen, but she will do anything to get her freedom again. If I was Amari I would feel anger towards Mr.Derby for killing a innocent baby. That would motivate me to leave and find freedom, because blacks were treated poorly there. If I was in Amari’s place I would try my best to survive the journey to the South. If one puts their mind to their goal, they can accomplish it. Nothing ever comes easy, especially trying to earn freedom. Amari should try to fight through the difficult task that way come her way once she is taken away. Escaping from slavery is what her family would have wanted for her. Also for Polly and Tidbit. Polly’s family wanted her to find new opportunities life and Tidbit’s mother wanted him to have a better life than she had. If they accomplish the difficult challenges, they would make themselves and family proud.
Quotes:
“It’s hard to hide when yo’ skin is black and everybody else got white skin.” Page 189.
This quote explains how it's difficult for slaves to run away because due to their skin color its so noticeable to tell. People would explain how slaves can escape easily, but it’s nowhere near easy. If one sees a black person they will take them to gain money. They see them as working tools because they are strong but also unintelligent. If one does escape and gets captured again, they be beaten to death and put on chains. One would not risk it because how they were treated is poorly enough. One can not talk about slavery if they have never experienced it meaning stating what was easy and difficult. Slavery was a time where all blacks wanted to end their lives because of how badly they were treated. Death was easier than the cruelty of the white men. There has been blacks who escaped from slavery and spoke about their experience to the world. But most blacks never got freedom again and died working.
“Instead, I shall refuse to let you die.” Page 183.
Mr.Derby said this to his wife once he figured out the truth of the baby and her lover.
He killed the father of the baby first, Noah. Once he did that Mrs.Derby cried and was full of anger because he was the one man she truly loved. But as soon as he killed her baby, she wished to die with them as well. Mr.derby did not want that to happen because death would be too easy for her. He wants the emptiness in her life to eat her alive because she betrayed him. What Mr.Derby was pure evil and deserves to be punish. He killed an innocent baby who did not choose to be born. It was not the baby’s fault who was picked to have a father who is black and a mother who is white. He could’ve sold the baby and not kill it. The baby was hopeless who was only a few hours born. Mr.Derby should let his wife leave because it's clear that she does not love him. He is only hurting her and
himself.
Character:
Mrs. Derby Mrs.Derby was a woman with a big heart but her whole life was controlled by men. Back in the day, women had no rights and had to follow whatever the men said. An unexpected turn in her life happened when she gave birth. The baby was black, not white. Earlier, Mrs. Derby fell in love with a slave named Noah. She did not pay attention to his color nor rank. She simply fell in love and did not choose to do with anybody else, but was forced to married Mr.Derby. It was not known for a Mistress and slave to be together due to the whites just using them for money. Mrs. Derby was different from the other white women. Most women would marry for wealth, whereas Mrs. Derby fell in love with what's inside a man by doing that nothing else mattered to her. This explains why she treated slaves as any other human. She believed slaves deserved a chance in life, not as working tool but her point was powerless due to being a woman. Once her lover and baby were killed, she just wanted to end her life because it was now full of pain and emptiness.
