Deuteronomy Assignment

1. Read Deuteronomy 16:18-20
Describe the requirements of judges in Israel based on this passage: In verse eighteen, Israel is commanded to “appoint judges,” which I find very interesting, because now instead of God telling them who to appoint, he is trusting them to choose wisely amongst the people that are in the tribe. Also, just the fact that they now need to appoint judges shows how much growth the tribe has had. They need to find a group of people to start their judicial system. Also, the king that is appointed will be from the tribe of Israel. They can’t allow a person from outside their tribe to become king of Israel.
Later it warns the king not to acquire many horses and wives. This is more of a warning to the king against becoming to wealthy and abusive in his power that he has been given. Also to refrain from any of the temptations that he will face as the king of a nation. Then he will be given a book of all of the laws that he must read daily so than he doesn’t become arrogant and power hungry. These commands will help to keep the king that is appointed a good leader and in turn keep the kingdom of Israel healthy.
Compare this passage to 1 Kings 10:14-11:10, which contains a description of Solomon as king. Discuss the specific ways that Solomon’s kingship compares to the warnings and requirements of Deuteronomy 17: King Solomon broke pretty much all of the guidelines that were given by God for kings. God tell kings not to acquire many horses but king Solomon not only had 12,000 horsemen which means he had at least that many horses. He also had 700 wives, which breaks the law that kings can’t have multiple wives. The whole second half of chapter ten in kings is telling how much money Solomon had and how it was acquired through bribes which breaks two more laws about
