Through out the book, Chris is prompted to make many small decisions in order to determine how he will live the rest of his life. From the moment he decided to go onto the road from Virginia to the West Coast, then landing in Alaska, he made small mistakes due to ignorance to fine details. During the most part of the book, Christopher McCandless is struggling without himself knowing of it. Many people he sees and meets along the way have warned him about the dangers of traversing the wilderness, alone with very little supplies and experience. After journeying into the deep Alaskan wilderness, Chris's actions show that with ignorance to small details, suffering will soon follow.…
“The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is a story about a hunter, Rainsford, who finds a deserted island, where he meets General Zaroff who too shares an interest in hunting. On this island, General Zaroff hunts humans that have had the misfortune to end up on his island. Although Zaroff lives in a very civilized home with electricity and fancy food, Zaroff himself is a very uncivilized being. In the story, General Zaroff is explaining to Rainsford why he hunts humans. “...If I wish to hunt, why should I not? I hunt the scum of the earth...a thoroughbred horse or hound is worth more than the score of them.” (Connell, 64). Zaroff is saying that it is okay to hunt people if you are better than them. He does not value human life. This makes…

David Fallon’s film, Call of the Wild, is movie surrounding the adventures of a young man and his dog. I watched the film on my computer on July 1st, 2015. The movie begins with a kidnapped dog, named Buck, being auctioned off. Buck immediately steals the attention of young Miles, the other protagonist in the movie. Buck initially works as a sled dog for a Yukon mail carrier. On his first job, Buck faces severe weather, wolf attacks, and a fight with Spitz, the team’s lead dog. The harsh conditions kill every dog except for Buck and leaves the mail carrier in a near-death condition. Buck saves the mail carrier, but is sold again to two travelers, Hal and Mercedes. Miles is hired as a travel guide for the duo. Hal mistreats the dogs, refuses to listen to Miles, and eventually causes his own death. Mercedes and Miles are able to survive the journey with Buck’s aid.…

Jack London is most well-known for his novels Call of the Wild and White Fang. The novels and the short story “To Build a Fire” share a similar theme of survival in the wildernerness. London’s “To Build A Fire” is a story about a man and a dog traveling the Yukon trail. In the story the man is struggling to survive the harsh environment of the Klondike. “To Build a Fire” is a naturalistic story, influenced by scientific determinism as well as by Darwin’s theory of evolution because London was a socialist and a realist. Jack London traveled across Canada and Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush. Jack London’s time in the Klondike influenced the setting, characters,…

“The Most Dangerous Game” is a favorite for many young readers as the text pulls the reader into what is going on very easily. In this story, there is a lot of action, and the context of the story is interesting as a man hunts humans. The text is very descriptive which makes the reader truly visualize what the characters are doing, just like watching a movie in your head. For the simple fact that this story is very easy to follow, very descriptive, and based on events that don’t often happen, younger readers enjoy this book over “Hunters in the Snow.” “Hunters in the Snow” is also based around hunting as well. This story talks a lot about the problems these gentlemen have, like obesity and spousal problems. This material is more appropriate for mature readers because less experience readers don’t know how to follow along, or how to sympathize with the characters.…
