As technology has grown over the years, the Internet has become a gigantic craze. You can now view a photograph of your house from an orbiting satellite, you can research anything you like with the click of a button and you can talk to people on the other side of the world. However, the Internet sensation, YouTube has recently attracted “1 billion users, and also become a major factor on the Internet, with 4 billion views per day.” Offering a range of facilities from advertising your company, to sharing your personal videos with friends and even watching the latest news and sports results, it allows one to access whatever they want, whenever they want.
Simply, YouTube is designed as a video sharing website that allows users to upload they’re own videos and also watch ones that other users have posted. It is a completely free site allowing anyone to watch any video for free and users can upload an unlimited amount of content. “YouTube also allows people to embed videos into other social media sites, such as Facebook or Twitter,” making sharing videos around to friends and family much easier.
“All of YouTube videos are an Adobe Flash video format”, which is one of the most common video formats, allowing everyone to view its files. “In order to view YouTube videos, users must have Macromedia Flash Player 7.0 or higher installed on your computers.” The layout of YouTube’s homepage allows you to access different sections of the website, for example categories or channels. The homepage also shows visual culture, showing a series of advertisements for different companies. To view videos on YouTube, you don’t need an account, however if you want to access all of YouTube’s applications, you must sign up. “When uploading videos to Youtube, you have the option to edit your videos, but also to add tags, to allow others to find it, and also add descriptions and annotations”.
