extensive knowledge on the pop culture from the 1980s which is partially because of Halliday. Halliday had an obsession on the 1980s pop culture and the world thinks he uses references of it in the riddles to find the keys. Wade doesn’t like to deal with the real world, so he spends a majority of his time on OASIS.
His only friend is a person who goes by Aech on OASIS. He also, has a crush on a girl that goes by Art3mis. OASIS contains different worlds that people can travel to, but it costs money. Wade doesn’t have any money, so he is only able to be on the planet that contains his school or visit Aechs “basement”(Aechs personal chat room). Luckily, when Wade figures out the riddle he realizes that the first key is on the same world as his school. Wade wins the first key and begins to head to the first gate when he runs into Art3mis. They exchange their information to communicate and Wade goes on to find the first gate. He passes Halliday’s puzzle and opens the first gate, which gives him access to the next riddle to find the second key. This puts Wade on the scoreboard Halliday created that everyone can see and Art3mis follows after him. People find out how Wade found the first key, so it is not long after that other people’s names appear on the scoreboard. One problem that arises from this is a company known as Innovative Online Industries(IOI) sends all the workers they trained to pass the first gate. This company is a problem because if they find the egg and own OASIS they
will start charging people to use OASIS. They try to get Wade, Art3mis, Aech, Daito, and Shoto to join them since they are the first five on the scoreboard. All five refuse and work against each other to find the second key and unlock the second gate. However, the race to be the first to find the egg gets heated and ends up causing the death of a few people. All five find the second key and open the second gate, but so does the people working for IOI. Wade begins to work with the other four on the scoreboard to get the third key and open the third gate to make sure that IOI does not get it’s hands on OASIS.
I thought the idea behind the book sounded intriguing and I was very excited to read this book. References to the pop culture of the 1980s appear throughout the book. I understood some of them, but other flew overs flew over my head since I didn’t grow up in the 80s. I do think that the references were a little excessive at certain times. I enjoyed the characters and loved seeing them come together in the end. I thought the book was overly detailed at times, but the plot was interesting enough to keep from getting bored for too long. Altogether, it was a wonderful novel and I would definitely recommend it to a friend.
