Our reality is not just what we see in front of us. It is shaped by our past experiences, our beliefs, our society, and the people we encounter.
What is reality? Reality is the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them. No one can see the true reality; we all perceive it differently because of our past experiences, beliefs, people we encounter and how society shows it to us.
Our past experiences and beliefs dramatically shape the way we see things. They make us subconsciously predict how every situation will turn out. We see each of these situations differently. For example: If a prisoner and a wealthy man were abandoned in the desert, they will perceive the situation very differently. For the prisoner, it will mean freedom but for the wealthy man it will mean hardship. These perceptions of the reality before us effect how we react to the situation.
We are greatly influenced by our beliefs, whether they’re religious or an opinion they shape our perceived reality. As Shakespeare said, “there’s nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so”. To a certain extent, the way in which we perceive the world is entirely up to us. However, there are times when what we perceive is out of our control. Our perception of reality is dependent on how we are influenced, our beliefs and how we are taught to perceive the things we are surrounded by.
Society and the people around us shape our reality more than we think. Society shows us what our reality is supposed to be though media. They show us these ‘perfect’ people with ‘perfect’ lives and the people around us tell us that we need to either strive to be one of those people or fit their personal description of perfection.
Do people even think anymore or do we just take the thoughts from others and present them as our own? Instead of encouraging debate on topics we choose to sit with people who think exactly like us. We’re afraid of being rejected by others for thinking differently. A common perception of realty is that we must be the same as everyone else to be accepted.
Television has influenced how we see things as well with reality TV shows such as ‘X Factor’, Master Chef or The Block. These shows impact what we think is cool or ‘popular’ and instead of having our own taste we copy what we are shown. Again, we feel we must like the same things as everyone else to fit in although that is not the true reality.
Reality and perception are an immense part of our lives, they influence everything we do and every thought we have. Our perception is altered by our past experiences, our beliefs, society and the people we encounter. No one’s reality is the same and no reality is perfect. We need to manage how we perceive our reality so our mental health stays proficient.

According to Brown, people everywhere filter what they read and hear through the grid of their own worldview.1 We all see the world different and the assumptions and prejudices that have about the world have an effect on how we regard the world. The Christian worldview and the Islamic worldview are similar, but they are different in many ways. But, what is a worldview? The ways a person views and understands the world have an effect on everyone. Sire defines a worldview as "a set of presuppositions (or assumptions) which we hold (consciously or subconsciously) about the basic makeup of our world.”2…

In the book There Are No Children Here, Alex Kotlowitz use many different examples to develop the theme of his book, representation vs. reality. Representation is how places, people and ideas have been presented to us in words or images, it often show us only part of the picture or even the wrong picture. It may create stereotype. Reality, different from representation, it might be some truth that we do not want to believe. Reality is the state of things as they actually exist, rather than as they may appear or might be imagined.…

The article “Your Perception Is Your Reality” by Tony D. Clark discusses how individuals regarding their perception may be influenced by society; however, everyone has the ability to choose their own perception that corresponds with their lifestyle. There are plenty of advertisements and commercials that are shown to a wide audience on a daily basis, and people are there to witness them and become conditioned to believe an idea that could potentially shift their perception. As individuals with beating hearts and a working brain, we chose to select certain messages that seem pertinent to us and these ideas are what help develop our perception on the world. Eventually, people develop habits that involved choosing an idea more frequently than others, which also helps create who we are as a person. Clark illustrates how our perception is our reality by giving examples of how we can observe items around us and appreciate all that we see.…

Who has manipulated my mind in relation to reality? I believe that society has manipulated my mind in relation to reality in some way because I think that reality is just a state of mind. The physical aspect of the things I can see, touch, taste, etc. make me believe that everything I encounter is factual. Also society says to believe only what you believe to be real and don’t believe in fantasy because you have no physical connections to imagination.…

In these two stories you see both women being stereotyped. Christa Kilvington being stereotyped for being on government well fare. I can see why people would use that stereotype on her. A lot of the people see using the well fare system are dead beats so to speak, people that are too lazy or on drugs to go find a decent job. With Carol Paik she keeps getting the Asian stereotype where people think she looks like other Asians. I also can understand how people can make this mistake; I think every single one of us will admit that all Asian people look kind of similar and that we’ve each made the same mistake as the people in this story are making with Carol. I personally have made this mistake, even carol made it and she used to complain about people doing the same thing to her.…

According to Entrwistle, "Everyone has a worldview - a window through which he or she views the world, assumptions, and beliefs that color what he or she sees." (Entwistle, 2004, p. 67) The book begins by discussing in depth how our worldview affects our way of thinking about everything, including psychology and theology. As the author points out, our worldviews are not so much chosen as much as they are learned from our experiences, education, and culture. Most are not even aware that their views on everything are filtered through these windows, which both distort and clarify our interpretation of what we see.…

Every person in this world has their own reality. Just the same, everyone’s reality may differ from one another. What may seem an illusion to one person, may be the reality of someone who has a mental illness. Either way, it is all about perception and what we believe to be an illusion versus what we believe to be reality. An illusion does not represent actuality rather; it is something that has been invented by the human mind. Reality is something that people face on a day-to-day basis, and it is true. In the novel Tithe, the main character Kaye, watches her less-than-impressive reality mix with this illusion to the point where even she cannot distinguish the two. Her life was never truly normal; after all she did see faeries. Even though this was considered her reality, it was turned upside down and she was forced to flee to her hometown in New Jersey. Even there things start to get crazy and what she considered to be her “normal” world started getting thrown upside-down. In the modern faerie-tale Tithe, the author develops the main theme of the novel, illusion vs. reality, through the characters, imagery, and the setting.…

People do tend to believe in the reality of the world on which they are presented for many different reasons. For example, in Plato’s allegory of the cave, the people only live in shadows. However, if they were born in shadows and only knew darkness, there is no possible way they could understand the concept of light. They subconsciously accepted their reality as true even though it wasn’t, because that is the only reality in which they knew to be true. They had never before been introduced to light, therefore, how could they even begin to fathom the idea of the absence of darkness. Take a blind person for example. Someone who was born blind has never seen anything. There reality is total darkness. Even though light exists, and they can know it exists, they will never fully understand the concept of light because they are unable to comprehend the idea of it.…

Many things we see and understand can be affected by the society we live in, the beliefs we have, and our perceptions of the world. What I am going to try and do in this essay is discuss whether we see things and understand things not as they are, but as we are. In this essay, I will discuss several external factors which affect people and, therefore, interfere with of way of seeing and understanding. There are several issues to be discussed which can affect the way human beings understand and see things. There are sociologists, like David Émile Durkheim, who state that “society is supreme over the individual”. By saying this he wants to show us the power the society exerts on the individual. This may lead to a change in perception, and the way the individual will see and understand things. There are several ways of knowing, there is a short term P E A R L (Perception, Emotion, Reason, Language). Therefore, the society the individual lives on, the language he speaks, and cultural habits involving religion, will definitely affect the way the individual understand things.…
