Learning new skills and characteristics that will assist college graduates in the work field is important in order for us to have an advantage. Students who graduate are not always ready and do not know what their future employers expect from them. Knowing what employers expect from college students allows us to be prepared and successful employees. Nancy Barry gives very helpful advice in her book. In my college career, I had never had a class or read a book that demonstrated what are negative and positive things to do in a professional setting.
The information that Barry gives in her book will help me during my practicum experience by allowing me to practice these qualities and skills that I will need in my future profession. I will be able to use the information that she gives during my observations to gain experience in applying these skills. The information can also help me in my practicum experience by giving me the tools to learn how to network and create contacts that could help be in my future profession. I feel that every bit of information that Barry shared is valuable. I believe that I do an adequate job in avoiding the things that Barry states other professionals would not appreciate such as rolling my eyes, staring off into space, drumming my fingers or slouching (Barry, 2007).
