Mr. iqbal ahmed was a successful entrepreneur and he established five RMG factories in and around Dhaka. There are about 10000 employees working in these factories. Of the total employees 85% of them are female. The industry usually has two shifts a day (each shift 8 hourly). The management, during the peak season of export broad (October-January) get the increased workload done by employees working overtime beyond 8 hour of shift duty by another 3-4hours almost every working day. Sometime during peak season the management also keep the factory open on Friday (which is a govt. declared holiday) and treat it as working on overtime for the employees. Of course, working on Friday is not compulsory for employees, only those who are willing to work on overtime rate, they do the job. The over time allowance re given t a rate of tk. Ten per hour for skilled workers and tk. Five for unskilled workers in the factory.
Last month the workers have given notice in writing to the management (G.M. Production) and (GM HRM) to double their overtime allowance rates and to accept their request within a month.

2. Do you think you need consultation with GM (production) or anybody else on this issue before you

One of the most debated topics in management is whether it is more beneficial to hire new employees or pay overtime to increase production or coverage. Many factors go into this decision, including benefits, duration of the period of extra work needed, and even type of work involved. In Columbia University’s Department of Public Safety, this issue gets more attention than at most places of business. Minimal staffing levels, union regulations, and round-the-clock posts – among other factors – conspire to make this decision one that is faced often. When all factors are considered, is it better for the department to hire new officers when coverage is lacking, or to utilize overtime to staff positions as needed?…

Employee’s attitudes towards their career are more weighted towards work life than family life hence their productivity should be greater if they are putting more effort in. Indians work for longer hours in comparison to Americans, for an average of 10-12 hours a day, which does seem impressive however they take longer lunch and coffee breaks. This also means the factory will have to be kept open and running longer, increasing costs. A longer working day may also decrease production as workers get tired from the long day and therefore become less efficient.…
