The most obvious answer will be for public safety. But other reasons can be for common understanding of traffic laws so traffic rules and etiquettes can be followed together by drivers, as well as, keeping order and movement in traffic.

1. Safety

The number one reason for traffic laws is for keeping public safety. The main reason for the traffic laws is to reduce the number of deaths and injuries on our nation's roadways . According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are more than 1,700 fatalities and 840,000 injures yearly due to vehicle crashes off public highways.

Everyone knows that a motor vehicle can be extremely dangerous for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians and following traffic laws will help reducing the possible deaths and injuries. Yet, people driving the car can become immune to the dangers of driving in various ways:

-Having daydreams or other thoughts and not paying attention to the driving
-------------------------------------------------
-Falling asleep while driving either due to exhaustion, or under alcohol intoxication
-------------------------------------------------
--Being an angry driver and road rage taking over the driving

-driving a poorly maintained vehicles like with an about-to-fail brakes or tires

-over-speeding and losing vehicle control in turning tight corners

-not following proper light signals and crashing onto an incoming automobile

There are too many traffic violations that have led, are leading, or will be leading to serious automobile accidents.

Keeping traffic laws, as everyone knows, is paramount for keeping our lives safe.

2. Common Understanding

American drivers will be very uncomfortable in driving in Japan. Here, in United States, we the drivers are used to be driving on the right hand side of the road. But, in Japan and Great Briton, the drivers have a driving rule that driving are to be done on the left side of the road. This is not a traffic safety issue. This is about having a traffic law that will create a common understanding between drivers in the same country about which side of road will be used to drive. So a traffic law is also used for common understanding among drivers besides the safety issue.

Without an agreed traffic laws and rules of the road, drivers will be in serious disagreement in most driving situation. For another example, when approaching a four stop sign corner, a driver can expect other drivers to follow the right-of-way rules at stop signs as well as keeping proper direction as been dictated in their lanes. Another example will be using hand signals, that are commonly agreed among drivers, for signaling various turns. Without the agreed hand signals, the communication between drivers would be impossible.

Following the same rules of the road will provide drivers with the same set of expected behaviors among drivers. This will lead to the sense of security among drivers. Without the same set of the rules, you cannot expect how the other driver will act.

Rules of the road are the general practices and procedures that road users are required to follow. These rules usually apply to all road users, though they are of special importance to motorists and motorcyclists. To achieve common understanding between drivers as well as with pedestrians, learning traffic rules and etiquettes and following them becomes an everyday necessity for us to survive on road.

3. Order and movement in traffic

Safety is certainly the primary point for traffic laws, but it also keeps order. If people did not obey traffic laws, there would be chaos on the roads causing major problems, and preventing things from getting to where they need to be on time/in time. Without proper order on roads, the traffic will lose any free flows. Uncontrolled traffic comes in the absence of lane markings and traffic control signals. Have you experienced a jammed traffic roads because of a malfunctioning traffic light? The drivers will not be able to drive at normal speed since every single car would need to stop at the traffic light corner and then decide which car has a right-of-way and then proceed. Drivers would be honking often in disagreement as to who got to the corner first.

Without the functioning traffic laws, there shall be no organized traffic and this would lead to severe problems in traffic flows.
