Rebekah Nathan Rites Of Passage
Anthropology
Nathan’s My Freshman The protagonist in the novel, Rebekah Nathan talks about the existence of division along racial and cultural lines with the institutions of higher learning. While she was undercover as a student at Northern Arizona University, the professor learnt that there were silent and largely unseen divisions that separated local students from international students. Most of the local students were adamant that they were not aware of the cultural differences among their inner circles. However, the professor’s investigation revealed that most of these students had no international student as a close friend. Within San Jose, these instances of segregation are rare mainly because the diversity levels are extremely high.

Example of rites of passage includes ceremonies that mark birthdays, marriage, and graduation. The first stage in a rite of passage is separation that involves withdrawal from the current state and prepares to occupy a different one. This detachment is normally symbolized. The second stage, the liminal stage, is marked by the lack of a defined position. An individual has left their old way of life but is yet to adopt the new one. Ambiguity is one of the common features of this phase. The last stage is called the incorporation stage and id displayed when an individual finally embraces their new status. A major rite of passage is when joining the army. The separation stage is marked by shaving off the hair to symbolize abandoning the civilian life. The second stage is characterized by a reluctance to be a soldier as well as a need to show patriotic behavior. The last stage for a soldier is when they are sworn in officially and given a symbol to show their …show more content…
Sandy Caron proposed that approximately 10% of the total college students held the perception that love and sex were two inseparable concepts. Consequently, this new generation of youth had a shallow understanding of sex. Rather than experiencing a mutual satisfaction of emotions, the young people in the current generation opt to perform sex in an emotionless, physical and unproductive way. In the 1990s, this percentage was approximately 70%. The change in perceptions over the years has been triggered mostly by pornography and a lack of parenting on sexual matters.
Consequence of Marriage There is a problem with marrying in a community property state since the official title is normally registered under the name of one partner and never both. Computing any inheritance gifts that were awarded to the couple was problematic. Furthermore, it is difficult to decide on such cases since case law and applicable verdicts differ depending on the state the couple occupies. Therefore, while it may be relatively easy to decide the best way of separating family property in the event of a divorce, it is more complicated under a community property state.

Colleges and universities are no noticed for their educational status instead of their racial or social groups. Black teachers are no longer seen as a rarity on any educational environment, black students are not seen as a rarity on campus, but society has grown, or rather diminished, into assigning stereotypes to every social group; stereotypes are no longer focused on minorities. Minorities now play an integral role in colleges; at this point in time colleges are proud if a diverse campus and even advertise it. Rather than being bounded to colleges Nikki Giovanni’s concerns have moved on, leaving campuses free of racism, and exploded into society.…

A person usually undergoes rites of passage when they choose to become part of a certain group. When the rites of passage is completed then they are prepared to be initiated into the group, in the two stories read in class I noted two examples of rite of passage and initiation experienced by the main character of each story first-hand. In the story “A&P” Sammy is at work and identifies his rites of passage when three un-conformed females enter the store and steals his attention , when he see his manager mistreat the girls he feel he must quit in order to gain his un-conformed independence and join the group. In the story “Doe Season” Andy the daughter of a…

A member of the Army does not simply become an Army professional overnight. The Army professional, as a member of the Profession of Arms, is bound to uphold two great commitments. The first is commitment in service of the American people. Our government derives its authority from the will of the people and through this we receive our mandate to uphold and preserve the Constitution. The second commitment of the Army professional is to his or her fellow soldiers. The lethality of our profession demands that we care for and trust in the soldiers to our left and right. Taken together, these two commitments define the Army professional.…

The education system is formatted in a way to make you fail through practice you subconsciously follow. Implications of certain behaviors is a way which has become a major factor of an individual’s identity; in fact, devices such as white supremacy and patriarchy are deeply embedded in the system which cause the student to become mindless slaves through the oppressive treatment they are provided. Due to the normalization of these standards, kids begin to adapt to the teachings and comply with the portrayal that their community has given them; as a result, they begin to regard the portrayal as a fact and allow it to shape the way that one interacts with another. Similarly, such practices cause distinctions between ethnic groups by labeling some…

During the civil war, there was a tremendous change in economic and social order called the "glided age". This was the period where industrialist and business men replaced the plantation class and they also had strong relations with the republican parties as well. Around the end of the nine teeth century, many people believed in social darwinism. According to Give Me Liberty, social darwinism is the “failure to advance in society was widely thought to indicate a lack of character, an absence of self reliance and determination in the face of adversity ” (Foner, 535).Owning property became a liberty as well and many Americans had the freedom to do so. Yet, this liberty came at a price for workers due to constant exploitation.…

If a person traveled back in time and observed a couple, he might see a women sitting at home cooking a large meal for her ten children and husband to arrive home to. Some of these clubs are referred to as “Diversity Clubs.” According to the self-reported descriptions of these clubs, the themes and activities of the diversity clubs cut across a wide range of topics involving race and the ongoing challenges confronted by many racial and ethnic minority groups in America. These clubs provide students in hyper-segregated White high schools the platform to discuss the challenges faced by the minority groups in America, and the opportunity and design programming that brings awareness to the needs and challenges faced by various minority groups. However, the work of these diversity-type clubs is conducted in a racially isolated, predominantly White environment. Because the environment is homogeneously White, the impact of this environment inhibits students from developing a well-rounded concept of the other, and may help students develop a sense that “the other” is inferior or lacking. This, in turn, does not have a significant impact on the development of the traits/skills that students will need as they pursue their lives or studies beyond the high school setting, and may very well lead to a culture shock or dissonance when these students enter other settings that are not…
