Albert Ellis – R.E.B.T
• Rational Emotive Behaviour therapy is a form of psychotherapy and a philosophy of living created by Ellis in 1950’s.
• R.E.B.T focusses on helping clients change irrational beliefs.
• Based on the premise that whenever we become upset it is not the event that has taken place that upsets us, it is the beliefs that we hold that causes the onset of depression, anxiety and so on.
• Ellis and R.E.B.T believed the vast majority of us want to be happy.
• The goal of R.E.B.T is to help people alter illogical beliefs and negative thinking patterns in order to overcome psychological disorders and mental distresses.
Albert Ellis – R.E.B.T
• Ellis developed a simple ABC format to teach people how their beliefs caused their emotional and behavioural responses
• A – Something happens
• B – Belief about the situation
• C – Emotional reaction to the belief
• Ellis believed there to be 3 common irrational beliefs;
- I must do well and win the approval of others for my performance or else I am no good.
- Other people must treat me considerately, fairly and kindly, and in exactly the way I want them to treat me. If they don’t, they are no good and they deserve to be punished
- I must get what I want, when I want it; and I must not get what I don’t want. It’s terrible if I don’t get what I want and I cant stand it.
