Rec Team Differences
Choosing between playing for a school team or playing on a club or recreational team is often a big decision for many high school athletes. This is especially prominent in the sport of basketball. There is a multitude of options for how you can play basketball: school team, rec league, or AAU(amateur athletic union). AAU is very similar to being on a school sport. Rec teams, however, are a lot different. The differences and various benefits of both school and rec teams attract different types of athletes and should be taken into consideration when deciding on who to play for. Even for people that don’t know anything about basketball, there is one major difference that stands out between school and rec basketball: the coaching. When you play

Miriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines ‘coach’ as “one who instructs players in the fundamentals of a competitive sport and directs team strategy” (218). Many people depict coaches as grouchy, intense people who only care about whether their team wins. A coach, to me, is more than that. A coach is a person who teaches valuable lessons, whether it be on or off the court, field, or stage. They…

As a fourth grader, being told that “winning isn’t everything” was a little hard to believe. Only recently do I realize how true this statement is and how important it is to learn this. I believe that in playing sports, what is most important is improving oneself, working as a team, and demonstrating good sportsmanship. Playing CBAA basketball has taught me these values and has played a large role in shaping me into the humble and compassionate person that I am today.…

I played basketball for all four years of my high school. I was on the freshman team my freshman year, Junior Varsity team my sophomore year, and played Varsity my junior and senior year. My freshman year I was voted team captain and that helped me gain leadership skills and communication skills. I earned the award of honorable mentioned in basketball. In Basketball I practiced a lot, because I knew I could get better. Throughout basketball we had several coaching changes. We had Mr. Smith then Mr. Parker and now Mrs. Smith as coaches. Having a different coach every year I feel like it was making it more difficult for the players to grow as a team and ourselves. Each coach had very different ways of teaching the game. Even though it was hard to have coaches leave we also gained different amounts of knowledge from each one, which I thought was a great privilege to get to…

When playing basketball in high school the training is a breeze compared to college. When in High school we only started training one month prior to the basketball season. We would put more effort in fundamentals and drills than in lifting weights or running. Any high school coach would rather have players that are fundamentally sound in the game. Strength and conditioning will always come second to most high school coaches. Although in…

Coaches, like teachers, are responsible for the growth and well being of their players, so when things don’t go well with the team, the coaches come under fire. One big difference between a good teacher and a good coach is that a good coach can get fired just because of a team’s performance. I have seen many good coaches get fired just because they had the horrible task of coaching the “Clippers.” Good coaches can usually turn a bad team around after a couple of years, but must be given time to make the necessary changes to help the progress of the…

Nearly 65% of children say they participate in sports to be with their friends (Statistic Brain). Sports were established so that the individual could not only exercise, but also to compete against a rival. Just as there are individual sports, there are team sports in high school. The idea of a team sport is that every single person on the field or court must work in unison to have the greatest opportunity to win. In addition to the increasing popularity of sports, the average child’s age when they join a team is decreasing. For example, the age that a child joins a basketball team has shifted from fourth grade to first grade or even kindergarten in the past decade. School is the primary factor when you review the participation in athletics,…

Coaches at the Division III level care just as much about your schoolwork just as much as your sport. In 1973-1992, UNLV basketball was at its best under the coach Jerry Tarkanian. Over his 19 years of coaching there he made four, final-four appearances and in 2013 was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame (source). There are roughly thirteen to fifteen players on a Division I team, which would mean he roughly coached 266 players. Of the 266 he coached only one player, his son, graduated with a college degree. A Division III would be foolishly embarrassed and fired if he were to be that type of coach. Coaches often provide their players with academic support or study plans, checking in with professors regularly for attendance and progress…

While there are many similarities between old school and new school basketball, there are also many differences between them. But, before we get into that you should know what old school basketball actually really is. “Old school” basketball was a game created by James Naismith in 1891 that originally set out to have 13 rules. It was a game where usually back then there were 9 players on each team competing, players weren’t allowed to get back in the game once out, and players originally would shoot a soccer ball into a square box of 18 inches or a peach basket. All of those things and many more have changed over the course of time. But, there are still some things in “old school” basketball that actually still do exist or apply in what is now called “new school” basketball. Things like how you can’t run with the ball in your hands, which is called traveling, how you can throw the basketball in any direction you want with one or both hands, and how…

Have you ever imagined not having a coach for your sports team? Or why your coach is so successful? Even though they are very demanding, they’re essential for any team’s success. “I demand a lot out of my players, but we have fun and I give them room to learn and make mistakes,” said Coach Mike Bates. They provide structure and are the heart and souls of each team. Coaches have to love the game. The team reflects the coach, if he’s successful so will you be. The coach needs to be disciplined and teach the fundamentals of the game. They should instill moral values into the team.…
