Recalled Food Products
My discussion is on the recall of food products. Recently in the news there have been recalls on, Hot Pockets and Uncle Ben’s Rice. These are not the only products that have been recalled. In February of 2014 alone, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have reported twelve companies with food product recalls (Food, n.d.) What is a food recall? According to the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) a food recall is a voluntary action by a manufacturer or distributor to protect the public from products that may cause health problems or possible death. A recall is intended to remove food products from commerce when there is reason to believe the products may be adulterated or misbranded (States, n.d.). People may wonder why they do not hear about all the different food recalls. A committed investigate and classifies recalls based on relative health risks. According to the USDA the following are how the classes are made up:
Class I - A Class I recall involves a health hazard situation in which there is a reasonable probability that eating the food will cause health problems or death.
Class II - A Class II recall involves a potential health hazard situation in which there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from eating the food.
Class III - A Class III recall involves a situation in which eating the food will not cause adverse health consequences. In class 1 and 2 the FSIS informs the public by a Recall Release and in a class 3 issue they send out a Recall Notification Report (RNR). Recall releases are only issued to the media outlets in the areas where the product was distributed. A RNR is not released to media wire services or media outlets. They both get posted on the FSIS website. (State, n.d.) In the case of the Hot Pocket recall, the USDA, as cited by CNN (2014), recalled more than 8.7 million pound of meat from the Ranch
