Participants expressed a desire to learn and to become productive member of society. It is also learned that the role of the social worker was viewed as part of the rehabilitation transformation process that helps the offender to recognize responsibilities and promote healing, life-skills, improved self-efficacy and self-esteem. A limitation of this study was minimal representation of culture, educational background, marital status, and race. Further research detailing how the correctional officers deal the needs of offenders is needed. An influx of drugs, overcrowding, poor living conditions and rape are deemed as influences that hinder progression. This study shows that the role of social workers, along with effective rehabilitation programs have a positive impact on the welfare of offenders. Rehabilitation is principal in reducing recidivism rates. Appropriate treatment is implemented both inside and outside of incarceration systems. Missouri has a reentry program in which the intent is to mock life outside the prison, thus allowing offender input that produces improved decision making and accountability (Petersilia, 2003, p.
