Recklessness in the Odyssey
Odysseus ' overdeveloped pride and arrogance led him to act recklessly in Book Nine of the Odyssey. This caused unfortunate scenarios for both Odysseus and his men.

Odysseus had a lot of pride. This is shown when he states that he is "known to the world" and that his fame "has reached the skies" - book 9 line 21-22This is the pride that he has of his name, which leads to his questionable judgment. He regarded as a great hero and that makes him believe that his decisions cannot be wrong. It is very interesting that in the Greek culture where reputation is so significant, it is the very thing that leads to his damaging behavior.

Odysseus shows recklessness throughout the novel. Instead of continuing his journey, Odysseus wanted to explore the mainland, the Land of the Cyclops. Once he arrived at the cave, Odysseus wants to gain hospitality of the owner. His questionable judgment lies here. He does not know if the ,inhabitants are civilized or caring, nonetheless, he makes an uniformed, risky decision. He even expresses this: "what are they - violent savage, lawless? or friendly to strangers, god-fearing men?" book 9 lines 195-196Later on, after Odysseus cleverly defeated the Cyclops, which evidently put him in an even higher state of pride. He taunted Polyphemus long after he had been utterly defeated. Then he went on to revealed his true identity to the CyclopsHe suffered the horrible consequences of his impulsive decisions and actions. Several of his men died horrendous deaths. Their limbs were torn and then they were eaten by a monster. When he instigates the blinded giant, he almost ends the lives of his entire crew because the Cyclops hurls a boulder at the boat. Even though it misses, the aftermath of its splash almost pushed them into Polyphemus ' reach. Once Polyphemus knew that it was the great Odysseus who had blinded him, he prayed to his powerful father Poseidon for revenge. This is how Homer points out to us that we should not act on impulse.

Odysseus encounters many trials on his grand journey homeward, and these trials teach him many valuable lessons. Polyphemus, pride. One of the first lessons Odysseus learns comes from Polyphemus. After outsmarting Polyphemus, Odysseus and his men are sailing away from the island. Odysseus then decides to boast to Polyphemus, saying “if any man on the face of the earth should ask you/ who blinded you, shamed you so- say Odysseus” (Homer IX 559-60). Consequently, Polyphemus curses Odysseus, praying to Poseidon to avenge him. This encounter shows Odysseus that pride can destroy even the strongest man. Another trial Odysseus learns by comes from Circe. On Circe's Island, Odysseus must be cautious and cunning to survive. After he has overcome her,…

When Odysseus offers Zeus a prized Lamb’s thighbones, he refuses them, and Odysseus realizes his mistake. He states that “Zeus disdained my offering, destruction for my ships he had in store and death for those who sailed them.” He wanted absolutely nothing to do with him, which told Odysseus that he would have no guidance or protection from him; they would have to take the journey on alone. It was then that Odysseus knew that the voyage home would be difficult, and that he would have to prove himself by adhering to the god’s advice. The fact that Odysseus does not have Zeus on his side is extremely important, it means that Odysseus would have to prove himself by acting with restraint, the men’s lives depended on it. When Odysseus had a chance to return home with the remaining crew, he was still inclined to disobey the gods thinking that he could fight his way out of his destiny, something for which Circe berated him, saying, “Must you have battle in your heart forever? The bloody toil of combat? ...will you not yield to the immortal gods?” Odysseus is a fighter, and believes that he is above all, which shows that he still will not “yield”, or admit he’s not equally great. This trait is the root of the issues that arise in the epic tale, and causes the gods to be filled with disdain towards him. It is also the cause of the men’s demise, because of his arrogance, he ruins his chances of…

A personal virtue that is a major theme in the epic, The Odyssey, is loyalty and perseverance. The best example of loyalty in of the epic, Penelope, who waited faithfully in Ithaca for 20 years for her husband, Odysseus’, to return. Odysseus’ son Telemachus, who also showed loyalty by standing by his father against the suitors who are after the throne. The two analytical lenses that I will use to interpret this epic, is the Psychological and the social class lens. The psychology lens focuses on the internal struggles of a character in a text. This could be seen by the three main characters, Odysseus, Telemachus, and Penelope. All three character, psychologically, have their mind set on their longing reunion throughout the epic which ties to…

Furthermore, Odysseus was a bad leader and led to his men’s destruction because he had blindly sacrificed them. Leadership In The Odyssey

Similar to most Homeric heroes, Odysseus wants to obtain glory and recognition for his courageous deeds. Though he would often take it too far and become arrogant, confidence is hugely important in leadership. At certain times, however, he would pompously ignore someone’s advice or act how he wanted, regardless of the consequences of his choices. The best example of this is when he intentionally hollered back to the Cyclops who he was as he was leaving. The result of this is that he brought calamity on himself as well as his men due to the relationship that Poseidon and the Cyclops had. However, once he reaches Ithaca, the way he bides his time and disguises himself as a beggar shows how he has developed and changed. Instead, he could have simply rushed home and declared himself before the extremely hostile suitors (“change”). “He is not the same glory-hungry individual who often committed rash and rather vacuous actions in order to gain kudos(“change”).” More recently, the texts have proved that Odysseus has come a long way, learned a lot from past mistakes, and developed accordingly during the route of these…

One of the traits that Odysseus demonstrates is courage. This is displayed in many situations such as when Odysseus demands hospitality from the Cyclops: “It was our luck to come here; here we stand beholden for your help, or any gifts you give- as custom is to honor strangers. We would entreat you, great Sir, have a care for the gods’ courtesy; Zeus will avenge the unoffending guest.”(Page 1052) This is courageous because the Cyclops is a giant that towers over them and demanding anything from a beast of that size takes much courage and bravery. Another display of courageousness is when Odysseus comes up with the plan to make a weapon out of a stake with a sharp point and puncture the Cyclops’s eye out with it. This takes a great deal of courage and bravery for Odysseus and his remaining men to complete because it is a very difficult and risky task that could end in disaster at any moment. Odysseus also demonstrates courage when trying to avoid the Sirens, the Wandering Rocks, the Scylla, and the Charybdis while trying to sail home. He overcomes these obstacles with courage and intelligence that allows him and some of his men to escape alive. There are countless events in the Odyssey that…

However, it can be clearly seen that his goal is just to satisfy himself and throughout his journey his deceit and dishonesty resulted in many misdemeanors. Odysseus caused his crew a great amount of trouble in many situations. Even though in difficult times, Odysseus was wise, those times would not have had to come if he had been honest and thoughtful with his actions. Odysseus lead his crew to the island of Aeolia. There the wind king gave Odysseus a bag which had all the stormy winds that would have been in their path in it. Odysseus did not tell his crew what was in the bag, so they remained suspicious about it. They then grow “curious and suspicious [and then the] sailors open the bag, thinking it contains treasure…” which results in the whole ship being blown all the way back to the island of Aeolia(Holt 673). As the reader can see Odysseus could have just told his crew what was in the bag and what was in it, instead he decides to be deceitful and not tell them. This makes his crew very curious so they open it which blows them back to the island. The author displays that Odysseus was not a very good leader because it seems that he doesn't know how to be honest and trustful or to at least use his deceit and dishonesty for a beneficial reason. Later on in the story, Odysseus leads his crew to the home of Circe, the Enchantress. After facing much…

A hero would not be thought of today as thinking of people as less than them. This shows the hubris of Odysseus, another detrimental feature of the King of Ithaca. His ego and pride are a huge flaw in his character which often can also lead to the death of his friends. On the island of the cyclops he would not leave the cave of Polyphemus even though it looked dangerous until he “saw him, saw what gifts he’d give” (Book 9, line 260) and even though it appropriate to arrogantly “set our hands on the cheeses” and “eat the bulk ourselves and [settle] down inside” (Book 9, line 260). This excessive entitlement leads to many of Odysseus’ men being slaughtered by the giant when even a soldier of Odysseus’ had suggested they take the food and leave rather than risking being killed, which Odysseus ignores. Another flaw of Odysseus is his infidelity to Penelope. While she waits loyally for Odysseus to come back he sleeps around with both Circe and Calypso. He makes it sound like he was forced to sleep with Calypso “since the nymph no longer pleased” (Book 5, line 170) but it is in fact shown that he at some time wanted to based on…

His need to win Kleos gets in the way, and puts his and his men’s lives at risk (Sparknotes editors). When they entered the Cyclops cave, he refused to leave when his men asked him. He wanted to be known for meeting and fighting a Cyclops. By staying he lost the lives of 6 men and risked the possibility of being eaten alive. After attacking the Cyclops his pride gets in the way when he informs Polyphemus the name of his attacker, which led to Poseidon thwarting his every move to get home. Penelope was deceived into thinking her husband was loyal and had spent many years suffering trying to get home. Instead Odysseus is unfaithful and is even offered marriage. He stayed with Circe many months and only left until his men asked him to leave. “What possesses you to stay here? Its time you thought of Ithica” (Homer, 137). He might be self-controlled, but his curiosity brings him trouble sometimes. His ego and arrogance was the root of his problems. He would refuse to be wrong and was full of himself. (Abbit. M, Malek. K.)…

Odysseus shows he is undeserving of the admiration he receives through his selfish, merciless, and disloyal actions as well as his lack of leadership and reliance on the Gods. Throughout his trip home, Odysseus faced countless obstacles and acted cowardly when trying to overcome them. Whether it was his willingness to betray his wife by sleeping with another woman in order to progress his trip or killing his own men when they disobeyed, Odysseus is not heroic. During Odysseus’ retelling of his adventure in Book 9 of the Odyssey, he explains how he and his crew lands on an island, known as Sicily which is inhibited by cyclops. There he meets Polyphemus, a cyclop and blinds him after Polyphemus traps them in a cave, and eats 2 members of his crew. However, this is only Odysseus side of the story. In reality, Odysseus was the one who decides to steal Polyphemus’ cheese, make assumptions that Polyphemus was also a supporter of the Gods, expecting gifts as a guest, never giving a second thought of what he did to Polyphemus, and just dismisses everything because he is a hero who saves his crew from the monster. However, I will argue the book does not go in depth about how Polyphemus tries to be hospitable,…

    Odysseus Epic Hero

This is close to his only concrete character flaw, yet it easily overshadows any of his other traits. As CliffsNotes says, “He is confident that he represents virtue even when a modern audience might not be so sure” (Character Analysis Odysseus). His prideful arrogance follows him throughout the entire epic, yet it is most blatantly exhibited after he and his men’s escape from the Cyclopes’ cave. As if Odysseus simply can’t resist taking credit for his defeat of the monster, he declares, “Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye; / Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithaca!” (Homer 9.18-19). This was a rather unintelligent move, as he able to escape by cleverly tricking the Cyclops by saying his name was Nohbdy, and he only threw his disguise away because he wanted to be famed and known for defeating the monster. Odysseus’ pride is one of his most noticeable shortcomings, and similarly, one of his most…
