The war was full of forced unnatural actions, these actions had caused long lasting damage mentally and physically. Knowing the story behind Henry and Charley there are many similarities and differences. The war had caused mental stresses on both Charley and Henry impacting their overall performance. Henry and Charley undoubtedly suffered injuries but their time spent in the battle determined to what extent. Men in the war are also labeled only upon what was seen in front of other soldiers and not behind the scenes.
Both Henry and Charley lost their way of logical thinking resulting from the war. Henry had transitioned from coward to the meanest soldier on the battle field.
Charley had lost control of himself, as a result of that he killed everything and everything he saw move. For other soldiers they simply did not move. These reasons show that no matter what perspective one had on the war you would have mental damage.
Henry and Charley had survived the battle but had come out with very different injuries. Henry was only struck by the butt of a gun and caused small bleeding. Charley on the other hand had come out of the war barely able to walk on his own. The main reason for Henry not getting hurt was his escape from the first of the battles. All soldiers in the war will get hurt but it partially rests on how hard they fight.
Men in the war for the most part were seen as brave and labeled. Even after Charley put forth more effort in the war he was not showed as much recognition as Henry. In the Red Badge of Courage Henry is almost praised for his actions for leading the brigade this was only after he had run away out of fear. This shows that soldiers were only thought to be as good as they appear and what other men see.
The Red Badge of Courage and Soldiers Heart were very different but also the same felling overall. Mental damage was also a certain fact in which Charley and Henry experienced throughout their time spent in the war. Men in both stories were labeled on what they did on the battle field than behind the scene actions. Charley’s injuries were life threatening but on the other hand Henry only had minor cutting. The war was one of the worst things to happen no matter from what perspective it was told.
