The relationship between body and music is unique to an individual’s experience. Throughout this class we have negotiated and dissect the idea on “how text shapes a population and how a population shape the music.” We analyze how we respond to different genres, artist, and sounds. Now, it is time for us to test our knowledge and see what we have learned by attending a local performance. I show I decided to attend was China Rider: A Grateful Dead Experience at the Red Carpet Nightclub in St. Cloud.
Space
There is a room for everyone to enjoy at the Red Carpet Nightclub. The nightclub can be compared to a mix match puzzle or a maze where the entrance and exit are the same door. Each room fosters its own atmosphere and serves a different
purpose. For example, one room will be a traditional sports bar with a pool tables, dartboards, and an outside patio. Then, in the next room will have a dance floor with a playlist of the Billboard top 50 and fog machines. With each room in the Red Carpet being unique; I somehow found myself in the basement.
China Rider is set to perform in a basement bar that feels like my grandparent’s house. From the brick walls to the red textile carpet; this bar provide me a sense of place that feels familiar to home. (Menetrel 191) Also, the decor enhances the feeling of home by adding elements like a fireplace and a wooden moose holding a welcome sign. The bar plays on this idea of home more by supplying us with free popcorn, which I get for free at my grandparent's house as well. Although I never been to this bar before, the decoration they chose to represent this bar make me comfortable and relax.
I thought a lot about how the space was design versus how it is currently used. My theory is that the Red Carpet was once a department store and the basement was where they stored all their produce. This theory explains why the bar has no windows, in order to keep the produce in a dry environment and stay fresh longer. Now as a modern bar, the intention is to encourage interaction. For example, I found an unplug dartboard that was blocked by a couch in the back of the bar. The owner intently blocked the dartboard to encourage drinking and socialization. Also, the way the stage is build at ground level infers that the owners wanted the music to be part of the experience and not the main focus.
