First, Amir had to realize that there was no way he could ever go back into his past and change what he had done. No matter what he did, his past would never be changed because it was permanent. On the other hand, he could make sure that his good deeds outweighed the sins in his life. His first attempt at setting his soul free was to care for his late friend Hassan’s son who he discovered was actually his half nephew. Amir felt that by simply seeing the child, all of his feelings of remorse would disappear. Conversely, after seeing the conditions in which the child lives and witnesses the child being sodomized the same way Hassan was, Amir finally sees a way to that will truly rid him of his remorse and saves the child from his harsh environment. After being half beaten to a pulp for protecting his half nephew from receiving the same fate as his father, Amir brings the child with him to America and begins to provide a better life for him. Accomplishing this good deed finally eases Amir’s mind of all of his wrong doings. Thus he was freed from his mental prison of regret and
