In the play, Mama was struggling to find an affordable house due to everything being out of their budget, because the prices were raised as a result of her being black. The Younger family also, just had a number of setbacks by cause of their skin color.
They experienced racial housing segregation. In the play, Mama purchases a home in neighborhood that only houses white people. So, when she buys the house, a man tries to persuade her to sell her house again because they simply aren’t wanted there. The adults of the Younger family also have some troubles finding good, steady paying jobs because their skin color prohibits them from getting certain jobs. They all have a job that “serves” other people. For example, Walter works as a chauffeur and Ruth works as a maid as a result of those being the only jobs that they could acquire. In the time period of A Raisin in the Sun , the color of someone’s skin heavily affected their day-to-day life.
