In the story Red Scarf Girl by Ji Li Jiang, Ji Li Jiang is a model student and she has always been a determined person. Ji Li is a kindhearted girl that is always helpful to her classmates and has a good leadership. When Ji Li was little, she “[donated their] cast-iron kettle to [support Chairman Mao,] and when natural disasters had caused food shortages, she “[grew] pots of seaweed on the balcony”(27). This shows that Ji Li strongly believes in Chairman Mao and she tries to participate in the Cultural Revolution as much as she can. The Tree of Red Stars, by Tessa Bridal, presents many themes throughout the story. The story itself is of Magdalena Ortega Grey growing up in Uruguay as it is taken over by a military dictatorship. It chronicles not only her life, but the life of the poor, the social injustices of this time and the revolt against it. One of the themes contained in this novel is that of the activism of students. Students are the leaders of this revolt, they lead the Tupamaros. Students are displayed as the activists working for change. This can be compared to any college campus as university students are usually much more active politically than other groups of people in society.…
“The Red Convertible” by Louise Erdrich is a short story about two Native American brothers, Lyman and Henry, and their growing bond as brothers. Symbolism is used rather heavily in this story. One of the main symbols of the story, as noted in the title, is the red convertible. The red convertible symbolizes the relationship status of the two brothers, and the struggles they face as Henry is drafted into the Vietnam War as well as when he returns home.…

She just wanted to listen to some slow jazz and eat pizza rolls. But it did not happen the way she wanted. First, she saw her dad jump off the couch. As he did that, he screamed, “I’m superman!!!!” He then fell onto the floor like a brick hitting the ground. McKenzie was surprised that her dad could jump that high and just went to her bed and fell asleep. But as soon as she closed her eyes, she started to have these dreams. She was freaking out so much, she didn’t even realize her mom ran into the room. McKenzie was sleeping, but at the same time she was awake and screaming her head off. When she realized what was happening, she had a thought about this abandoned insane asylum on the edge of town.…

Tom wondered for what seemed to be the millionth time why Dectives were required to dress like wall-street bankers or stock analysts. At least that was the expectation in public, however the moment he had the office to himself, he unknotted his tie, slipped off the linen suit jacket, and undid the top button of his shirt, then sat back in his chair, raised his eyes to the ceiling, and tapped the tip of a ballpoint pen against his teeth. That was Tom's usual mode of concentration and contemplation, and so intent was the man's focus on the new case that all else slipped from his mind, even the recollection that he'd texted his wife. Therefore, the sudden familiar sound of her voice, accompanied by the enticing aroma of barbecue, startled him, and he immediately shot upright. The sight of Lila elicited a smile that only widened with the greeting and kiss. "Sorry baby."…
This paper is a discussion on my worldview and my personal beliefs about God and creation. I will be contrasting it with a secular writing, the “Ransom of Red Chief” by writer O. Henry. I will discuss how I came to form these views, and defend each of my arguments with examples from the bible and similar writings. A quick summary of what I believe about God, creation, humankind, epistemology and ethics are as follows. I believe God is all powerful and all knowing, and loves his creation enough to sacrifice his son for it. I believe he made people in his image to worship him, and I believe we need a personal relationship with him to be saved. I believe we know things through looking at the bible and the world around us and using basic logic to tie it together. What I believe about ethics is that every person was created in God’s image and the world also created by him, so we must treat both respectfully and as God tells us to in the bible.…

When it comes down to people and their worldview on different situations, many are different when compared to the next person. When asking a person for his or her worldview not only are you asking them for their personal opinion, but you are also asking them to look from a different perspective. Within this paper I plan to give my standpoint on the meaning of worldview. While also expressing my worldview believe about God, the creation and the natural world, about humankind, about epistemology, about ethics and how I came to form my own personal worldview. While deliberating my in relationship to the worldview expressed by a secular short story, “The Ransom of Red Chief” by O. Henry.…
Symbols are everywhere, embodying meanings larger than life. One can find symbolism in music, literature, and even in decoration! They play huge roles in specific themes or emotions in certain situations. In “Masque of the Red Death”, by Edgar Allan Poe, death is personified, terror reigns, and tragedy strikes, as he tells a short tale of the infamous “Black Plague” that reigned over Europe in the middle ages, and how death is absolutely inevitable. In the story, Poe used an intense amount of symbolism within the seven colored chambers to establish the mood of the story, the seven stages of life, and to emphasize the terror of the situation.…
Long ago there lived this boy named Terminus, one day while walking through the woods a hole opened out of nowhere the hole had steps leading down to the bottom. He wanted to see what was down there so he went down the steps. When he got to the bottom he saw a line of glowing colorful rocks, he went to pick up the first rock which was bright red and a ghost like woman named Trish appeared. Trish told Terminus that she’s been waiting for the day to finally meet him and that she’s been stuck down in the trapped hole for centuries and couldn’t find the light until Terminus came and Trish told him everything he needs to know.…
It’s 5-something in the morning when the alarm goes off. I force myself out of bed despite the fact that it’s Saturday morning. “You only get so many days like this,” I mumble. Thirty minutes later, my boots are crunching across the frost as I make my way towards my usual spot. I settle in and my heart rate slows as I sit in the pitch-black darkness, waiting for the world to wake up. I doze off for a few minutes and awake to the chorus of the woods as the sky turns gray, then pink. There is no Iphones, no TV, no conference calls, no routine, no voices—just birds and squirrels going about their business.…
