Many of the pollutants react with solar energy and water to produce secondary pollutants, for example sulfur dioxide and water form sulfuric acid.…
Furthermore, Suncor invests greatly in clean and renewable energy sources. Their wind power project, result in the prevention of about 500,000tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually2. The ethanol facility in Ontario is Canada’s largest bio-fuels plant that produces about 400 million liters per year and it‘s blended into Petro- Canada’s gasoline and leads to the averting of up to 600,000tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year3.…
Alberta is responsible for one-third of Canada’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHGs). Specifically, the oil sands are Canada’s largest-growing source of GHGs, and these emissions are expected to increase substantially in the future.…
The United States produces a quarter of the world’s total carbon emissions, and American’s per capita emissions are five times the world average. More than 25 percent of manmade emissions of carbon dioxide in the U.S. are from transportation. Light duty vehicles, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), minivans, and other light trucks are prolific carbon dioxide emitters. Using renewable fuels in transportation can help reduce the air pollution associated with burning petroleum. Compared to gasoline, ethanol made from corn is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20-30 percent. Moreover, ethanol from cellulose – made from the stalks, stems and leaves of plants reduce it by about 85 percent or more.…
Climate change and global warming are important issues that affect everyone on planet earth. The future of our planet is reliant on us solving this issue. Canada has done a lot to be an active contributor to the minimizing this problem such as signing the Paris agreement, which deals with greenhouse gases and emissions mitigation. It is very important for Canada as a developed nation to play a large role in this conversation. Canada may not be number 1 in greenhouse emission but our emission are rather disproportionate to our population in the world. Canada consume more energy than all African nation’s combined. Therefore I believe Canada could be doing more to address this problem. Canada can help reduce carbon emissions by investing and…
Air quality is a measure of the amount of pollutants emitted into the atmosphere and the dispersion potential of an area to dilute those pollutants. It is a massive problem of urban living and remains one of the largest environmental concerns. Spatial dimension relates to how air quality differs between places at different times and under different weather patterns. Increasing population and demand for more goods puts greater pressure on air quality. The human population’s interaction with the environment relates to the ecological dimension. In terms of air quality this relates to the impacts of increased gases and particles associated with transportation, industrial activities, smoking, dust storms from over grazing on marginal land, bush fires and the burning fossil fuels . Many of these activities cause increases in carbon monoxide, ozone, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, lead and particles in the atmosphere. People get health problems due to these increases. For example, excessive carbon monoxide levels in the blood stream reduce its ability to transport oxygen. This in turn causes headaches and tiredness.…
The City of Windsor is recognized for having poor air quality in comparison with other Cities; however, relative studies have revealed associations between day-to-day variations in air pollution levels and respiratory health in Windsor.…
Canada is a fast-growing country, which means that the economy is developing rapidly. The impact of these factors can be point out as air pollution. The main source of air pollution in Canada is the energy that burn fossil fuels. The most significant major is the Alberta Oil Sands. Alberta’s air quality is the worst compared to other cities. So, what can we do to change this bad situation? The answer is ‘Wind Power’. Wind power, the use of air flow through wind turbines to mechanically power generators for electric power .an alternative energy that can replace burning fossil fuels, it is clean, renewable, produces non greenhouse gas emissions, consumes no water, and uses less…
Article one describes how the air pollution was so bad in 16 British cities that the British covered was placed into violation of EU laws. Air pollution is a serious public health threat and it kills up to tens of thousands of people every year. In fact it states that researchers concluded that just up to two hours of exposure to tragic fumes causes significant reductions in lung capacity among people who have resiratory conditions. Even worse is that the diesel fumes contain carbon particles that are believed to enter the blood increasing you're risk of a heart attack. Article two explains that women are much more likely to die by 38% from sudden cardiac arrest if they live near major roads. Even though researchers couldn't 100% prove air…
The Department of Health and Environmental Control states that The Clean Air Act is a federal law which describes the responsibilities of the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for defending and improving the nation’s air quality. The World Health Organization states that the basic requirement of human health and well-being is clean air. Each year more than 2 million premature deaths can be connected to the effects of urban indoor and outdoor air pollution caused by the burning of solid fuels, according to the World Health Organization assessment burden of disease for air pollution. I will explain why air quality is important to humans and the environment, whether South Carolina complies with the air quality standards, and whether the WHO’s standards for pollution has been successful.…
To the environmental protection agency I want to request something we should do about our air pollution problems that we are currently having here in the united states. I Ask myself Why is air pollution a global issue that should be monitored. I am a American citizens and my state is currently affected by it. Here are some reason why.…
Currently, fossil fuel usage makes up 86.4% of the world’s primary energy sources, mainly in petroleum (36%), coal (27.4%), and natural gas (23.0%) (US Department of Energy). Though efforts are being made to convert to more environmentally-friendly solutions such as wind, solar, and electrical power, these resources usually are more expensive and less convenient currently. Currently, governing bodies such as the United Nations and EPA are working to develop strategies to curb the issue. Ideas such as geoengineering and using quicklime in oceans to absorb CO2 have been discussed, but the studies are still early, and long-term effects aren’t yet fully known. Another issue would be that large companies and governments may be less willing to get rid of their entire infrastructures and the jobs they provide in favor of less profitable and more expensive methods.…
Past studies have concluded that replacing traditional gasoline with biofuels, such as ethanol and biodiesel, would cause a reduction in the amount of greenhouse gasses emitted into the air. This aspect is especially important to humanity because many climate and ecosystem experts preach that dangerous climate change is bound to happen when our atmosphere is over 350 ppm (parts per million) carbon. We are currently at 397 ppm. Biofuels appear to be better than petroleum-based fuels because the idea was that the additional plants that would be…
Carbon dioxide levels in Earth’s atmosphere reached 400 parts per million in 2013, and have been increasing since then. This is the highest it has been in thousands of years (UXL Encyclopedia of Science). This change in atmospheric chemistry has been created by air pollution, which mainly comes from the burning of fossil fuels as a fuel source or for electricity. Alternative energy, also known as renewable energy, is a solution to the problems caused by fossil fuel burning. Many countries around the world are beginning to switch to renewable energy. Following this example, switching to alternative energy in America is a realistic solution to the problems caused by obtaining energy from nonrenewable sources.…
Every year air pollution has been increasing in the U.S and there are many factors that contribute to this. Pollution is caused by many things which include: smoke from fires, pesticides used in agriculture, and the biggest of them all the burning of fossil fuels. The issue of pollution is a huge problem in the U.S and according to multiple sources, the state of California has the most cities in the top 10 cities with the worst air pollution. Some of these cities on this list include Fresno, CA and many cities around Fresno like Visalia, Madera, and Bakersfield. Pollution can have severe effects and some of these effects of pollution are global warming, the depletion of the ozone layer, and land can become infertile.…
