premature labor and birth. A new study in California found that better sleep might
just be the best way to address premature birth. The researchers working on the study
are hoping to identify medical and social interventions that could help reduce preterm
birth.
The researchers found that “Women who have been diagnosed with insomnia or
sleep apnea were about twice as likely to have premature birth and labor than

colleagues gathered the records of almost 3,000,000 births from 2007-2012. Each
record contained medical history of the mother and child and notes taken throughout
the pregnancy, and noted from the birth. From within those births, about 2,300 of the
women had been diagnosed with a sleep disorder sometime during their pregnancy.
Although the main problems were Insomnia and sleep apnea; excessive sleepiness and
restless leg syndrome were also seen. The researchers found that if a woman has
insomnia that her risk on preterm birth was increased by almost 30%. They also found
that if you have sleep apnea that your risk of preterm birth was increased by almost
40%!
It has been said that a lack of sleep is unlikely the direct cause early birth, it is one of
the most-likely triggers of other processes that lead to premature birth, such as
inflammation. Sleep problems I n expectant mothers should alert doctors to potential
