INTRODUCTION:
Your paper needs to begin with an introduction which tells your reader the purposes of your essay, and the structure/outline of discussion that you will follow.
Your purposes are to tell your reader what the concept of workforce diversity is, why it is important for today’s managers to develop strategies to manage it (diversity is increasing, management of it can lead to competitive advantage etc) and how organisation culture can form part of strategies to manage it. Remember you will need to write your purposes in sentences that show a logical flow your essay will follow.
It is up to you to determine the structure of your essay. You might find that the ‘BACKGROUND’ section provides a reasonable structure you could follow.
Remember that the final writing of your introduction should be done after the essay is written. Begin with dot points for your introduction initially to provide a guide for your writing, once the paper is written you will have a much clearer understanding of how to write a final introduction.
In addition, your conclusion should show links back to your introduction. In other words, your introduction provides information about what the paper will discuss, and how it will be discussed, and your conclusion will summarise the main points from your essay about what was discussed/the findings/outcomes.
BODY SECTIONS:
It is up to you to determine how many paragraphs you will need. Remember that all sentences in each paragraph should link to each other, and that each paragraph should contain information showing how it links to your argument about the statement(s).
Your reader should be able to see also that paragraphs have a logical flow ie each paragraph should flow from previous paragraph.
Remember you have been asked to address two statements: the importance of managing workforce diversity for today’s managers, and the role of organisation culture in managing workforce diversity. It is likely that you will discuss aspects of workforce diversity in the first sections of your essay, and then lead into a discussion of organisation culture and how it can be used as a strategy to manage workforce diversity.
Your sources provide a great deal of information about workforce diversity, and also organisation culture. You know from your studies in week 3 that organisational culture provides a guide to managers and all employees about appropriate decisions, strategies, and behaviours. Organisation culture sets the parameters for the values of the organisation, and employees are ‘managed’ through rewards for showing behaviours that align with these values. Having an organisation culture that values the diversity in the organisation’s workforce, and rewards those who embrace diversity, and those who develop strategies to provide an inclusive culture, provides the links you need to show the value of organisation culture in managing workforce diversity.
It is up to you to make these links between the two concepts. Your sources may not specifically state the value of organisation culture in managing workforce diversity, but you need to draw the two together as you develop your arguments.
Remember that YOU are writing this essay. This means you ‘use’ your source materials to support your claims and statements. Try to avoid using source information without any interpretation and/or statements about the value of the information as it relates to your arguments. Point out to your reader the value of the information you have used as a means of ensuring your points are clearly made, and supported by evidence.
Avoid also any information or points in your source material you don’t understand. A logical argument that addresses the task statement is what we’re looking for. Unusual words, long convoluted phrases and statements are confusing, use everyday language and put the information into your own words where possible.
CONCLUSION:
Your conclusion summarises the core arguments you have presented, and shows specific links back to the essay statements/purposes of your essay. You can now finalise the writing of your introduction. Remember to avoid any new information in a conclusion.
