REFLECTION
Being a Balayan volunteer is a great opportunity for me to help other people and our environment. In every community that we go theirs a lot of learning’s that I gained, lot of things I had shared and especially a lot of smiles I had received from them. And in every tree planting, mangrove planting, coastal cleaning that I joined, even in that simple ways to help the environment it is still a big contribution that I made for our mother earth. In Balayan I discover my passion, to help, help and help physically, emotionally, and spirituality. I thank my co-volunteers that made me part of them, the staffs and Sir Myk the program officer of Balayan has really welcomed me in the office, and they always giving us opportunities to make us a good citizen that Balayan always conduct seminars for are betterment , like the Basic Orientation Seminar in which a lot of learnings I gained, about how to be an effective and good leader, and what’s volunteerism. Another seminar that I attended in balayan is the Pinoy Big Voter–training for trainers which help me clear my fear to vote, because it is my first time that I’ll vote this coming election. In this seminar I was able to know my right as a person the right to vote, and to vote honestly and wisely that before I or we vote we must really know who to vote right. In joining Balayan I go to some places that is new to me and meet those great people and in them I also learned from their experiences in life that I can apply to my life later on.
I am blessed that Im one of the volunteer in Balayan, because I can experience great things and adventure that ordinary student can’t experience. It also enlightened me the reality of life, that I hope other student here in La Salle could see.

Since I have always been interested in activities that offer opportunities for helping people, I recently volunteered at XXX Hospital. Actually, the purpose of this activity was twofold, both to use my time for assisting the sick and disabled, and to try a hand at working in a medical environment. Both purposes were successfully fulfilled. I really enjoyed seeing that even with my limited knowledge I was able to make a difference in the daily routine of the hospital. My best reward was the grateful smiles of the patients whom I could entertain with my personal stories and divert from the depressing daily reality. As for myself, I would say that these people were also a real support for me as we developed a very friendly relationship that allowed me to share the everyday happenings of my life with these people and make them feel important through giving advice on different issues. In addition, I realized that a medical profession is the best career I could dream of, so comfortably I felt in these surroundings.…

The three months that I spent volunteering in Cambodia undoubtedly contain the most valuable moments of my lifetime. I spent the majority of my time teaching English to primary students, doing renovations on various schools, and occasionally doing work at families homes. The children that I taught are unquestionably the most eager students that Ive ever met. Its incredibly exciting and rewarding being able to teach students who are enthusiastic about learning. Not only are they great to teach, but they are also unbelievably enjoyable to be around. With beautiful smiles plastered to their faces, they were always grabbing on to me, and despite their unfortunate circumstances they are the happiest children Ive ever met. One aspect that I loved about the program was our living situation. Instead of staying in a hostel or hotel, we lived in a home in a local village. Although we had certain amenities that the majority of our neighbors did not, we were immediately immersed in the culture. The staff at GSO are absolutely amazing and teach you so much about Cambodian culture. I became great friends with all of them and give them a lot of credit for my great experience. The most rewarding experience of my life blossomed from the love that I invested in my classroom day after day, and unexpectedly the good that I did for my underprivileged students nurtured important concepts into my own life. Love cultivated with each broken smile, every whole-hearted laugh, and the unforeseen generosity I witnessed on a daily basis. I learned the ins and outs of compassion and was enlightened about the potency of simple acts of kindness. Best of all I received an indispensable supply of gratitude for the unseen beauties of my privileged life. The only regret that I had when leaving was that I hadnt stayed longer.…

What can I say about my experience in SPES this year? I got shocked when I knew that I was assigned in Mayor’s Office because I wasn’t expecting but it has something to do with my course. I already expected that when we say Mayor’s office the first thing that was expected was this is the busiest office in the whole office of the Government of Malabon because it is the center of all the transactions in the City of Malabon concerning the welfare of our co-Malabonian. Mayor’s Office staffs were saying that we are lucky because we were assigned in the month of Malabon day. In our first day we did make some bandiritas that put inside of the amphitheater for the celebration of Malabon day. The next day, we make pabitin and palayok that requested by different barangays. I learned to socialize to different kind of people that enters and leave the Mayor’s office. Some of them are in needs in terms of medical assistance, financial assistance, educational assistance, etc. I also learned to use Xerox and Fax machines and answer telephone calls. There are some days that we go to different barangays to help in assisting people in Kalingang Malabonian wherein Mayor reach different barangays to help in their prior needs. Sometimes I was assigned in HEWCC to sort files and documents or being assigned in Pagamutang Bayan ng Malabon to help med.techs and assist students that undergo drug testing. Those last days of our summer in cityhall are spent in repacking bags for BalikEskwela 2015 and calling different schools for delivery of the said bags. Because of this experience, I opened my mind to support different activities and programs to be headed of our Hon. Antolin A. Oreta III that giving Malabonians a better kind of living. Staffs and all people in Mayor’s office were very kind and have a warm welcome to all the people that enters the office. We condole each other when we share our heartaches, we grieve for the lapses we did but stay inspired to continue, for we have learned our lessons. We laugh for the joy this life offers for us even in times of desperations and financial instability. I promised to myself to never leave my classroom without seeing their eyes cheer in gladness. And at the end of my class, I always give them some words of encouragement from famous people to let them feel that they can do what others did.
