Reflection Paper No. 1 May 24, 2013 John Foppe is a successful man who owns a successful international training company with the aim to motivate leaders and workers to be of their best. He worked with big international companies such as Fortis, UniCredit, GE and many others. He authored a book titled “What’s Your Excuse?” that has been translated to six different languages worldwide.
Yes, all of these facts are common to intelligent men in a first world country. They have all the reasons to succeed and become great. But what makes him extra special is the fact that he has no arms. He was born without upper extremities. And how he grew up to be positive about life, to be perfectly able and independent, and to be successful as what he is today is the story that is worth to be pondered upon.
I saw the video of John Foppe’s life in our class and the words were like daggers hitting me hardly because I am one of those more-of-a-pessimist guys, who pitied his self easily, who envies a lot, who asks why life is unfair, and who questions why I am not the kind of man I dreamed to be. Even the movie clip left me in a state of asking why he was able to achieve a lot even with his disabilities and here comes me, with complete parts, yet of less achievement if none. I almost viewed that supposed to be inspiring video negatively. In fact I really did, until that night when I started writing this insight on a paper.
