Two themes that go hand-in-hand are the importance of family and loyalty. For the duration of the beginning half of the book, Elie passed up many chances of sure survival in order to stay with his family. One example being when a family friend of theirs offered to house them. His father refused to go, so Elie didn’t either. Elie, likewise, did his absolute best to stay with his father throughout the multitude of travelings and encampments they went through, despite the thought that he would have likely had a better go of things if he were alone. Two more key themes in Night are religion and race, both of which were the reasons behind why they were ever mistreated. Elie admittedly lost faith during the trials he faced. Although, if you read any of his Nobel Peace Prize speeches or other various narratives he wrote, you will see that he eventually gained it back, and even stated that his pain drew him nearer to God, in the end. Notwithstanding the many, many more themes, the last two I’m listing are fear and courage.
