Reflection: Ashford Writing Center
After going to the Ashford Writing Center, I have decided that the writing skill that I would like to improve, first, is to have a better grasp of proper APA formatting. I believe that I am fairly proficient with explaining and writing my ideas. Since beginning classes at Ashford University, particularly EDU 304, I admit that my understanding of APA formatting needs clarified.
The resources available at Ashford Writing Center that have been the most useful to me in regard to APA formatting would be the APA essay checklist for Students, the APA template, and the in-text citation guide. I am a very visual learner and access to the APA essay checklist and APA template has helped me to know of what I should strive for my essays to look like.
The citation guide has been very helpful in regard to knowing how to cite my resources appropriately and to avoid plagiarism.
I think that by having a better understanding of APA formatting that I will be better able to complete the assigned essays for my instructors. If the formatting is correct, the instructor will be able to focus on the content of the essay.
Having a proper grasp of APA formatting will also allow me to create more professional documents as well in my career. It is important to know that one’s ability to write proper documents is often one of the most important job skills. The formatting and content of the documents offered are a reflection of the person’s quality of work and character. For example, if my employer requests that I write a report for my job, it is important that I am able to offer a properly formatted document that is free of grammatical errors, and free of inappropriate language or slang. The document that I give directly reflects my abilities and character as an employee and representative of the company.
