Reflection: My Clinical Experience At Hamline Elementary
My clinical experience took place at Hamline Elementary. I observed Ms. Moos. She is an EBD (Emotional Behavioral Disorders) specialist. Ms. Moos works with students in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade in any subject in which support is needed. The students she works with have developmental delays, learning disabilities, and other health disabilities. During the times of my clinical experience, I observed Ms. Moos working with kindergarteners and second graders. An experience that was difficult for me involved a kindergartener, Kyree. He a student that, as explained to me, is very capable of tasks within the class room but acts as though he needs help that is unnecessary, a learned helplessness. While within the general kindergarten class, Kyree and his peers were working on writing. The goal of the activity was to have students re-write a phrase and then draw a corresponding picture. With Ms. Moos being an EBD specialist, most students she works with have a high-incidence disability. This relates to chapter seven of our text book. Chapter seven includes a section on learning disabilities, which focused on skills that a student may struggle with. For example, routinely students complete mini-lesson with reproduction, written and spoken, of sounds of letters, letter combinations, and words. After completion of the mini-lesson students listen to Ms. Moos say a word and they write it with correct spelling. Numerous times there was a disconnect on spelling the word correctly and spelling the word phonetically. I observed this happen mostly with sight words that could not be phonetically spelt. This is exemplified within our text in regards to writing skills of learners with learning and behavioral

    The student is five years old. The student is in kindergarten. The kindergarten class has fourteen children. The classroom is a mainstreamed and both teachers have special education experience. The student has strengths in reading comprehension, phonics, and spelling. He enjoys puzzles and can complete a fifty piece puzzle on his own. The student focuses on the end pieces of the puzzle first. The puzzle is a picture of the United States and the students reads all the states and their capitals. When the student completes the puzzles he recites the cities that are listed. His weaknesses are in physical activities that involve group participation. The student does not show interest in teacher directed games such as leap frog. The student has trouble making eye contact and engaging in conversations. The student repeats questions when he is asked. The student repeats what he hears throughout the day so he will often say hello, how are you? When the student repeats the phrase he does not make eye contact or pause for a response. The student has an IEP and a goal for the student is to promote conversations with peers, family members, and teachers. The IEP states that the student works with a therapist for speech. The speech therapist states that the student uses echolalia which is repetitive use of language. The student can read age appropriate books for eight year olds. The student read the book, Stegosaurus The Dinosaur with the Smallest Brain, by Elizabeth J. Sandell. The student pronounced every word correctly. Another saying he often repeats out loud often are, come on lets wash your hands. When the student says that, he does not go wash his hands. In fact the teachers have to aid in hand washing with the student because he seems to avoid soap when not supervised. The student was…

    Unit two consists of articles related to Learning disabilities (LD). The articles range from academic support to declines in LD staffing, and specific types of LD such as Dyslexia, to building organizational skills to helping LD students become successful. In the article, “Learning Disabilities” Freiberg (2015), it explains that the LD eligibility category makes up the largest number of students enrolled in inclusive and regular classrooms from grades k-12. The article goes on to explain other eligibility categories that mirror LD, and how more precise labeling has contributed to a reduced number of students being labeled LD.     Students with learning disabilities often find learning a difficult and painful process. The presence of their learning disability can make learning to read, write, and do math especially challenging (Sturomski, July 1997). Teachers are the common denominator for teaching students with learning disabilities strategies and techniques for learning. Teacher can present the students with a specific strategy and teach how and when to use the strategy.
