Reflection On Clinical Rotation
As I reflect on my rotation of Nursing Science II on a medical surgical floor at Thompson Hospital, I begin my rotation with a notion of I am not certain what to expect, but I am expecting to be dealing with many different illnesses and with some patients who have multiple co-morbid on top of the illness that brings them into the hospital. So, to reinforce my knowledge of surgical illness and my assessments, I am looking for similarities and differences that I have observed from our practices back in class and from what is practiced here at the hospital. I note the different types illness and what was needed to care for the patient with those illness and the different practices & protocols regarding management of each illness. From there I then got report from co-assign and begun my head to toe assessment, the assessment is a very important to obtain ,as it can teach you any past medical surgeries by scar on the body , bruises or even current issues like CSMT checks to an effected area and edema edema, in the body and listening to bowel sounds can alert you to another issue in the body for example absent or hyperactive bowel issues could also mean a bowel blockage or even normal of absent bowel sounds after a surgery that. Listening to a patient lung sounds can catch pneumonia early and listening to the lungs can even help determine a health issue like what a person who COPD lung sound like. The head to toe assessment made me look for possible to new lesions appearing on the body going and the importance to reposition the patient who immobile every 2 hours to prevent the breakdown of the skin. On with the patient. Although I know how to do it due to the numerous times I've perform these procedures, it still feels different when you do these procedures yourself each time but as you do them more you will be able to enhance the skill and gain more confidence when you do it more
