Reflection On Field Experience
For my Education 2130 Field Experience sight I was placed in a twelfth-grade special education British Literature class at Lumpkin County High School. Luckily, I was placed with an unparalleled teacher who cared for her students as if they were her children. Before walking into Lumpkin County, I had never observed in a high school before, so I was anxious of what was to come. Throughout the course of this semester I was exposed to many aspects of what it meant to be an intentional teacher that I will remember forever and use in my classroom in the future.
Field Experience Site
This school is one of the state of Georgia’s thousands of public schools. Before this semester for my field experience, I had never gone to Lumpkin County High school, or any public school in Lumpkin County for that matter, so I had no clue what I was going into when the semester began. As I

Since this was an older grade level class many of the students did not want to ask for help even when they needed it, so I would try my best to ask them if I could do anything to help them.The students in this British Literature course were all exceptional learners, and according to Salvin this meant, “any individuals whose physical, mental, or behavioral performance is so different from the norm—either higher or lower—that additional services are required to meet their needs” (Salvin 2012 pg. 303). I spoke to Mrs. Endicott, their teacher one day and asked her questions about the class and how the school determined which students needed to be in this course. She informed me that based on the requirements set by the country, this course was the least restrictive environment for the students. When I spoke Mrs. Endicott about the class we had not read the chapter on learning disabilities in our textbook so, I was unsure of what this meant and decided it would be best to research the topic.     Education has also seen notable improvements when the act came into fruition as the percentage of those with special educational needs achieving 5 or more A*-C grades rose by a total of 56% between 2005 and 2011(2). Whilst the grades of those with disabilities have improved, it appears that the experience in education hasn’t had a great effect due to the act as 26% of disabled people in education reported having a negative experience largely due to the attitudes of others and lack of correct facilities(3). The articles range from academic support to declines in LD staffing, and specific types of LD such as Dyslexia, to building organizational skills to helping LD students become successful.     Disabled children and young people with special educational needs are entitled to access to children’s services, an education, health services, housing and Equality and non-discrimination entitlement. (The Disability Discrimination Act DDA) These arise when one or more public body has a relevant duty – whether this duty is owed to all disabled children or only to some, for example those with a certain level of need or those in a certain age group. It is vitally important ant that recognition of these needs are met early because those children who may show early signs of learning disabilities it is essential for children to obtain the support they need to be successful school. Identifying the symptoms early is key to ensuring the child reaches his/her potential. Early diagnosis leads to earlier support and greater opportunity to ensure the needs are met regardless of the learning disability.     In discussions of students with disabilities and their academic success, a controversial issue is weather or not students with identified learning disabilities should be required to participate in high stakes testing. While some argue that all students should be held to the same academic standards, regardless of their disability, others believe that these tests are too difficult for some students, namely – those with learning disabilities.     From the time when I was a little boy, growing up in Graves County, Kentucky, I have had problems with my reading and writing. Things never seemed to click for me, a trait that the teachers attributed to a mild case of dyslexia mixed with a healthy dose of attention deficit disorder. I knew, however, that no disorder was the cause of my distaste of reading and writing. Rather, there was nothing really interesting surrounding me that would grab my interest in the classroom.
