Reflection On Person Centred Practice
In this assignment I will be reflecting on my self awareness and personal attributes in my Person Centred Practice (PCP) unit, reflection is associated with learn from experience and is viewed as an important strategy for nurses (Benlow & Jordan, pp.163-2017). I will be discussing four areas in this essay, these areas are my own Self Awareness to person centred practice and my personal attributes to this unit which are; Enthusiasm, Reliability and Commitment. Within this essay I will explain how I have contributed to the unit of person centre practice.

SeIf Awareness

In this section I will be discussing my own self awareness. Self awareness is important because as (College of the Canyons, n.d.) it allows us to be able to have a better understanding

I was very excited to start PCP as I was going to learn about how to become a nurse, who puts the patient at the centre of their care. This enthusiasm has helped me to want to learn much more about how, as nurses, we can put the patient first and how the 6c’s of nursing (introduced by Jane Cummings, 2012) which are; care, compassion, competence, communication, courage, and commitment (RCNi, The 6c’s of Nursing, 2015) can be implemented. I have been able to show that I am enthusiastic and would like to learn more by asking questions during seminars. I have also been able to develop my enthusiasm throughout the PCP unit by becoming more keen, I have been able to ask if I can help more within a group setting. I will carry on to build my enthusiasm by ensuring that I carry what I do within group seminars into practice I will ask questions, and I will keep asking if anyone within the practice area needs any help with doing anything, as George Coxon (2017) said ‘If you can’t be enthusiastic, do something else’ Meaning I need to keep my enthusiasm I have developed through PCP into my nursing …show more content…
When I began the PCP unit I feel that these key attributes were undeveloped. However throughout the course of the PCP unit I have strived to develop them. Going forward I feel I have made huge improvements and I now have a firm base on which to grow these attributes further. I will now be able to use my newly developed skills in nursing practice.

As is evident in my CAT I have grown in confidence and am connecting to patients by listening to their thoughts and fears and communicating concern. Benner (1984) asserts that by caring nurses can establish a condition of trust where help can be given and received. Now I feel like the patient's advocate and make sure that the patient experiences the care positively and is treated with dignity. The benefits of observing and participating in care with my mentors I have now learnt the nursing process enabling me to be aware of emotional and psychological aspects of care and hospitalisation. By utilising a reflective approach to my nursing education I have over the years slowly become intuitive.…

As nurses’ duties increase in difficulty and diversity, so must our knowledge base. The Tricouncil for nursing issued a “calling all RN/s to advance their education in the interest of enhancing quality and safety across the settings.”(May 2010). Advanced level nurses not only give excellent patient care increasing safety, but also serve as mentors and role model to new graduate nurses and ancillary nursing staff. This increases patient safety, allow the new nurses to grow in a positive learning environment and results in overall improved quality of care. Throughout the past two years I have worked as a pool nurse going to the various hospital departments improving my clinical skill and adding to by core of nursing knowledge. In that time I have met and worked with several of the advanced level nurses and have benefitted from their years or experience level of expert knowledge. In return when I charge on the Med – Surg floors I am able to return this back and teach our new entry level nurses skills which enable them to provide improved quality of patient care.…

Originally developed by Dr. Carl Rogers in the 1960s as an approach to psychotherapy, person centred care is an approach to nursing care which involves the patient’s participation in their own care. (Cited by Cox, 2011) It requires a therapeutic relationship between nurse and patient in order for the best outcome for the patient. The nurse’s role in this situation is to recognise the patient as a partner in their care, to provide a network of personal support and practical expertise without directing; only advising and facilitating the patient down their own path to recovery. It was from Mrs. Conner that my desire to become a Nurse Practitioner emerged, like her; I want to be able to efficiently assess, diagnose and manage the care of my patients. I want to give my patients personalized holistic care to help them build their own tools to take control of their condition and prevent them from ever having to step into an acute care…

There are many different aspects to being a ‘good nurse’, but there are six core principles of nursing which have emerged through progression of the nursing profession, (DoH 2012). The core principles were brought in as a result of issues raised within the National Health Service (NHS) and have been identified as caring and compassion; dignity; communication; professionalism; emotional intelligence and the nurse-patient relationship. The three principles I have chosen to analyse are communication, dignity and nurse-patient relationship because it is my belief that when a nurse lacks awareness of these, they will also lack the ability to be a successful nurse. From my own research and experience, these three principles are the ones I noticed the most, particularly when considering the experience I will be talking about in my reflective section. Although these principles are essential for being a ‘good nurse’, ensuring that you promote the health and wellbeing of patients, and providing support sufficient to encourage independence are also vital in caring for patients.…
