Reflection On Practice And Emotional Responses
In order to improve on practice, it is essential to reflect on our personal experiences and emotional responses (Fook & Gardner, 2007). When viewing Cheryl’s case in the film, there was a mix of emotions. I felt empathy for her struggle as she was a frustrated single mother who was doing the best she could. But another part of me was shocked at the attitude she had towards Jasmine when she stated: “she should be a better daughter”. If I was to interview Cheryl and she said that to me, I questioned whether I could contain my shock in that situation. My perception of Cheryl changed after that moment and I believe I would have focused more on the children than empowering her if I did not reflect on this. Due to my empathy towards her, it

    What is reflective practice? In short, it’s a practice that helps you become an active learner. Many of us, including myself, may be considered or interpreted as passive learners. Passive learning goes a bit like this: we read textbooks, we follow everything our instructor or teacher tells us (sometimes we tune out), we write exams and then…we forget what we learned.
