In the short story Where Have You Gone Charming Billy, Tim O’ Brien, examines a conflict with the main character Paul Berlin and his internal fear of dying. The story takes place around 1965-1973 during the Vietnam War. It is Paul’s first day at the war and he has been fighting his anxiety. He has already seen one of the twenty-six soldiers in his platoon die of a heart attack because of tripping a mine bomb. Many soldiers continuously tell Paul to just get used to the fear of the jungle however he is not able to do it. Paul was not able to stop giggling and when remembering the death of poor Billy he thinks to himself “while later poor Billy Boy stepped on the mine, and how it made a tiny little sound-poof- and how Billy Boy stood there with…
This next literature I will be discussing is “Don Quixote” written by Miguel De Cervantes which has a powerful message of social classes. This story tells you a lot about social classes and how it everyone is treated differently within the classes. Don Quixote is an old man who has read a lot of books about knights and decides to be come one. He is a very weather man and is one of the smartest people in his town. He set off on a great adventure in pursuit of eternal glory and drops what everything he was doing at home. This is alright for people who are wealth to do this, but people in the lower classes couldn’t afford to drop everything to chase a dream around.…
The dancing has already started when I arrived. I was told that they were doing the ‘Intertribal Dance’. In this particular dance, everyone is welcome to take part – even the spectators. The dancers moved in a circular clockwise motion a without any particular moves. They then invited the public to join them in the dance. I was hesitating to try it at first. But I told myself that won’t get the experience anywhere else. So, I decided to just do it. The basic step is the same step used by traditional dancers. First, one foot is tapped on one beat, placed down flatly. The action is then repeated with the opposite foot, without missing a beat. I enjoyed taking part in the dance as it was the only chance for me to experience the Native American culture closely.…
I want to inform my audience about my experience teaching the Quinceanera’s Court to dance for my daughter’s Fifteen Birthday party.…
At the beginning of the Civil War the Union and Confederacy both had their own advantages and disadvantages. Neither the Union nor the Confederacy were prepared for war, however the North had a few advantages the South did not. The Union had more soldiers, more factories, and better railroads than the Confederacy. On the other hand, they were defending their homeland, the Confederacy had better morale and drive (Stewart). The higher levels of morale in the South, however, did not make up for their disadvantages in the beginning of the war.…
Celebrating a quinceañera was not only about having a big party but also a tradition that helped shape me into the person I am today. To nearly all teenage girls what comes to mind when they think or hear about a quinceañera is the party. They imagine the dress, the limousine, the enormous reception hall and the dance. Problem is; that most eager birthday girls including myself, it takes the whole experience to really understand how symbolic and meaningful the celebration really is. Although it may simply be a big fifteenth birthday party to some girls but, for me it was an eye opening learning experience.…
At age of 10 I joined a dance academy named Gigi’s Academy and learned to dance Salsa, Jazz, and Rueda which is mostly danced by Latin’s. I performed a lot and made friends and really enjoyed dancing there. Everyone there was like a little family, we would have the annually year show in which we showed all the routines we practiced and it was like the most important event ever. I miss it a lot, I turned 13 and got out because I moved to homestead and my mother couldn’t drive there every day because it was too far. I had to start a new school named Somerset Academy Silver Palms. I was furious and so upset because I had to leave all my old friends behind and couldn’t believe I had to start over and wear there obnoxious uniform. Ironically It was the best two years ever that I have attend in school and that’s where I met all my friends which up till now are my closest friends. The school was a small school, about 1,000 kids in total and that’s all grades from kindergarten to your senior year. It was an extremely strict school, I got a detention for not having my tie buckled but it was on. I thought it was ridicules but that was school rules. I was there for my 7th…
Back in summer of 2014 all of our friends were so excited for the new year. We were going to be in 8th grade, at the top of the food chain at our Junior High. Not only were we excited about all the different things we were going to be able to do as 8th grader, like take chinese or year round spanish if you're into that. But what we were focusing on the eye of the prize, the 8th grade dance. The best part about this dance was that it wasn’t any ordinary dance, everyone had to be dressed up in nice clothes or otherwise they would be asked to leave. This…
A memory that will always remain vivid in my life is my quinceañera. Since I was small, I dreamed with having the most beautiful dress and an awesome party. My family would always tell me how important turning fifteen is and having a quinceañera to celebrate that turning point because it’s an initiation of responsibility, thus a big step in my life. Turning fifteen meant that I had to start helping in house chores, make my decisions cautiously, and become more independent. With this in mind, I had to prepare myself physically and mentally for my big day.…
A Quinceañera is the celebration of the transition from childhood to womanhood when a girl turn fifteen. A Quinceañera traditionally consists of two parts, the church ceremony and the party. The church ceremony is a service in honor of the girl turning fifteen, this usually lasts about an hour. Then is the big party, which is usually held in a building the looks like a huge castle. The girl traditionally wears a big pink princess dress, however, it is common to have a couple outfit changes during the party. Another tradition is that the girl will get either a gold necklace, ring, or earrings with a fifteen on it to wear at the party. At the party, the first thing the girl does is make a big entrance with her parents. Then she changes from the normal shoes she is wearing into heels, which symbolizes the change from being a child to a woman. Next are the individual dances. First, she dances with her dad, then she gets fifteen roses and one-by-one she picks fifteen different people to dance with her. After that, things settle down a little bit and people talk, dance, and enjoy some snacks. About half way through the party, the birthday girl and a group of friends perform a dance that they planned together in front of everyone. Then, a meal is served and while everyone is eating they show a video of all the big events in her life starting from when she was born all the up to her…

I was seated in the middle of the hall, surrounded by family and friends, I was presented with my tiara, heels, and my last doll. I was a princess, a woman who no longer needed to wear flats, and a young woman who needed had to outgrow the dolls. It was overwhelming wrapping my head around the concept of being my own woman, but it was what I wanted. Finally, it was time for the father-daughter dance, when it would be my last dance as my father’s little girl and my first dance as a woman with my court of honor.…

Attending the Spring Dance concert was a fun learning experience. I am glad that this was a required assignment for this dance class because if it was not required I am sure I would not have attended . The variety of dances have taught me different things, and one of them is that you do not have to do complex moves in order to dance. The dance I have decided to write about is Voicing Acceptance choreographed my Nancy Sorensen. There are many reasons why I have chosen to do my paper on this specific dance. I will discuss how the sound or movement, lighting, movement and females/males contribute to the overall success of the dance piece.…
Joining the lion dance team was a major turning point in my life. Through lion dancing, I was able to express myself without anyone knowing who I was. The lion head is a way for me to hide my identity, but my vehemence in dancing is from the motivation my family members’ criticism gave me, which made me want to do better. Because of the love and support I received from the lion dance team, I am more open-minded about the world. It allowed me to overcome my shyness and instilled me with the confidence and happiness I have…
