Reflection Paper 1
I. Introduction
During the course of this class I have been constantly reminded of God’s power. The character of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit has and is being spelled out to us this semester as well as the attributes of God. Two of these attributes are His Omnipresence and His Omnipotence.
II. Part One
a. Theological Definition
Omnipresence is the property of being everywhere at once. God exists in every place and time. There is nowhere that God isn’t. It is a term usually only reserved for gods and religious deities as it is all-together unfathomable. To be everywhere is a foreign concept to us and seems to in the very least imply that something has split into multiple parts in order to be in different places simultaneously. This is not so with God as He has no “parts”. He is simply everywhere all all times.
b. Biblical Foundation
Scripture tells us that God was present at and continues to be apparent in His creation, but God, himself, is not part of creation. He existed before creation, time, and space (Col 1:17). “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” ( Gen 1:1-2). Scripture also tells us explicably of His Omnipresence. “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.” (Prov 15:3) “ Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.” (Psalm 139:1-7). These are just a few of many descriptions of His omnipresence in the bible.
c. Practical application:
One of the most comforting verses about this is Matthew 18:20: “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” As a worship
