The reading assignment topics were diversity and social justice in groups, specialty and creativity in groups, and different evidence based interventions utilize in groups. I will be discussing the importance of criteria guidelines that the group leader needs to be aware before conducting group. Most importantly, the therapist needs to be familiar with their own self-awareness, be familiar with evidence-based practices, and have experiences in the field. The chapters were detailed explaining the criteria and explained the challenges with working with diverse populations. I obtained knowledge about techniques, skills, and interventions …show more content…
In addition, social justice needs to be implemented when facilitating a group. I know it is critical for the social worker to be creative when discussing social justice with other diverse group members. I assume incorporating social justice in the group is a challenge for the therapist and the individuals in group. However, there are several other populations that have certain criteria guidelines that are important when facilitating a group. For instance, some of the populations that are discussed in the chapter are military veterans, new mothers, and addictions. I know it is important for the therapist to be extremely experience and knowledge about these populations before facilitating a group. I strongly believe when working with military veterans it is important for the therapist to build a rapport and be familiar with the military terms when working with veterans. As a student, I have some experience with interacting with several veterans that are students at the university. Also, I have become more educated about how difficult it is for them to function in the society. For example, some of the veterans have discussed one of their difficulties for them was to

In this essay I am going to identify and describe how prejudice and discrimination impact on individuals and groups in school settings, by researching the current legislations, policies and procedures that are in place for safeguarding the welfare of children and young people. Group therapy aligns with Latino cultural values in 3 ways.(site) One way it aligns is through what is called allocentrism in Latino culture. Allocentrism is putting others at the center of attention, not yourself. Second, there is the concept of familismo. Familismo is a strong commitment to your family. Finally, there is a value in the Latino culture called personalismo. This aspect of Latino culture goes with group work, because it values a personal relationship. All three of these values go hand and hand with group work practice. In my assessment of the journal articles, a few special issues came up. Therefore, it is better to have open versus closed meetings. This way those who work varying shifts may attend. Also, it would be better to allow Latinos to express themselves in Spanish instead of English if they so choose. Many times the Spanish language expresses things more powerfully than the English language. As social workers we have to be aware of complex issues when dealing with immigrants. Things such as racism and immigration status can affect group…

Diversity literally means difference. Diversity recognizes that though people have things in common with each other, they are also different and unique in many ways. Diversity is about recognizing and valuing those differences. Diversity therefore consists of visible and non-visible factors, which include personal characteristics such as background, culture, personality and work-style in addition to the characteristics that are protected under discrimination legislation in terms of race, disability, gender, religion and belief, sexual orientation and age. By recognizing and understanding our individual differences and embracing them, and moving beyond simple tolerance, we can create a productive environment in which everybody feels valued.…

The importance of inclusive practice, in promoting equality and supporting diversity. Inclusion is the opposite of discrimination, by promoting inclusion we are supporting equality and diversity and challenging discrimination. Being able to accept and understand each other’s culture, race and religion is vital to successful social integration and a productive working environment. Equality means all people have the same value. I believe we shouldn’t treat people the same way. We need to recognise that people are individual’s and each individual has different needs. Our therapy groups were assigned today shortly after the viewing of a film in class. My fellow group members consisted of Bryant, Earl, Stephan and Tracy, and our group was designated with the concept of reality therapy. Our group had several tasks to complete prior to class dismissal. The list of things to complete included: appointing a group facilitator, developing the group purpose and a minimum of 3 norms for the group, setting-up a schedule for member-led exercises, and reading our group theory in Appendix 1.…

After completing my first semester of college, I have found a special drive within myself to do more and more. I was fortunate enough to seek help from individuals who also see the diversity barrier as a problem and ask them to educate me on why this is a problem and how can we as individuals do our part. Being from a city like Los Angeles, where we can find an exhausting amount of different cultures, we would expect to have many different faces in multiple professions. Instead we see the minimal. I attended a conference at the UC Irvine School of Medicine that really opened my eyes to the problems of diversity in medicine. This is a conference that I will forever be grateful that I attended. Here I listened to speakers of similar background…

I acknowledge their struggle and I will do all I can to understand their culture and lifestyle by learning as much as I can about them as our nations first people. In doing this I will value their input and encourage their participation. By having a genuine interest in Aboriginal/TSI culture and including this within the service will develop greater relationships and a better understanding between people on all levels. A strong commitment to anti-discrimination and tolerance within the workplace will provide all children and staff with a safe and happy environment, where we will learn and live with respect, consideration…

Groups talk about goals in different ways, using different words. Some groups have major and minor goals or meta- and micro-goals; others divide goals into mission, purpose or goal, and objectives, while other groups talk about aims and expectations. A group is strengthened to the extent it has clear goals and all members know what their roles are in helping to achieve them (Dimock and Kass, 2008, p.62-63). My placement is currently in the Mental Health field and as mental health workers we have groups that are organized to promote to mental health of all and to support the resilience and recovery of people experiencing mental illness.…
