Do it..
Think about it.
Formulate a theory about it
Do it again and see if it’s any better

Since starting this college course I have seen many similarities with how to interact with students and employees. I have also gained confidence speaking in front of the class. At the start of the college course this scared the life out of me. Now I realise the more I do it the less frightening it will be.

a: When explaining the importance of promoting appropriate behaviour in respect for others, this was something the class did on our first evening. We created a class contract of what we expect from each other as a group. We expect to be listened to, to be friendly and to provide constructive feedback.

On an occasion at work I was aware of a staff member communicating very negatively, for example sighing and tutting and general negativity. Supervision was due so it was brought into meeting that last had concerned had noticed a change in the person’s general attitude, I asked if there was a specific reason and was told there was not. Although they agreed that they were being negative. We discussed the workload and it was decided it was not that. It was mentioned by the staff member that they were feeling a little unsure of how to deal with a service user who had dementia and was unpredictable and seemed to have taken a dislike to the staff member .We discussed at length the way forward and I arranged for some training in challenging behaviour and dementia. The staff member realised she could not avoid the service user and that if she had mentioned her concerns sooner the problem would not have escalated. She tried to hide her feelings but they were shown in a different way. I agreed to mentor and support the staff member with the service user helping her to find an appropriate approach, the service user was feeding on the negative behaviour of the staff .In a few weeks the situation was improved undoubtedly and the staff member is more positive and no longer showing any sign of negativity. I recorded everything we had discussed and we both signed it. At the following supervision the staff had been on a training workshop and was awaiting further news of more. She mentioned previously that she felt it was a weakness in her that is why she had tried to cover it up but since our discussion and my ongoing support she would never hesitate to mention any concerns she had in the future.…

I work in a Jewish care home on EMI dementia nursing unit for the elderly. My clients suffer from dementia. They are in different stages of that illness, from mild to severe. Some of them are in end of live care. My clients come from different backgrounds then me and where raised in a very different way to how I was raised. It is important that I will remember this and respect their beliefs, as we all have personal beliefs and preferences based on our background and upbringing. I have been brought up in a catholic society where religious education was compulsory, however we still studied various other religions and were taught to respect all people and there beliefs. Prayers were a daily thing at the end of each assembly and whether or not I wanted to pay attention to the prayer time I had to respect the people that did. Religion may affect people in many different ways, mainly because we all come from different backgrounds and are taught differently. However, it is important to respect how people honor their religion. I am an catholic, however I still make time to talk to my clients about their religion and sometimes have prayer time with them, and when possible I take the clients to synagogue. I spend my time with them on Saturdays (in Jewish culture Sabbath is a day of rest) even though my own beliefs teach me something different, I know it makes the client happy so it makes me happy to do this. I know it is something that they feel so strongly about and it is amazing at how much I really now look forward to going to synagogue with them. It is part of the job that I do and parts of showing the clients that we care about what makes them happy and that we respect their beliefs even if ours are different.…

When I started my work placement at my setting I was working with my members of staff and manager who told me how to monitor children when they eat and which child cannot eat certain food because of their religion or culture. Before I started to give out the food for the children I had to read the food policies and procedures to know how to serve the food and drink for the children. At my placement I learnt how to monitor the children when they ate and how much they ate, and also about their allergies. I had to monitor how much the children drink and I had to make sure that they drink enough water or milk.…
