Throughout my nursing career, I have experienced several effective educational activities as a learner. My most recent learning experience as a learner was how to operate and administer insulin via External Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion Pump (ECSIP). Several patients are hospitalized with Self Administered ECSIPs. The primary nurse for that patient is expected to understand how to operate and care for this particular pump. I was very unfamiliar with this device because I was not exposed to it during nursing school. The entry-level education of prepares graduates with the knowledge, skills and professional behaviors to work safely and competently as contemporary health care professionals (). Therefore, anxiety was at an all time high due to my lack of experience with this device. This provided information on the scope of responsibility of the designated staff that are allowed to assist the patient with care of the insulin pump as well as general instructions for proper care. After reading the policy, we went into the patient’s room and Ally demonstrated how to operate the insulin pump. While demonstrating how to operate it, she explained each step and why she was doing it. When her demonstration was complete, she asked me to return the demonstration. She stood next to me as I demonstrated to her how to operate the pump. I felt a bit of relief that I had the opportunity to see her operate the device first and hear her explain each step. This provided me with the appropriate knowledge and confidence that I need to effectively return the demonstration of operation.
