During the first day after making first contact with Ms Xiao, I gained knowledge of the basic routine of the centre and the general job scope of my volunteer work. I was then instructed to perform a counselling task for one of the children isolated in the counselling room due to his rebellious nature.
After gaining a deeper understanding of the child, Joshua, I can relate to the reasoning behind his attitude towards his peers/school. Throughout the session, he expressed his frustration and problems. I shared the story of the happenings in Paris, invasion of privacy. …show more content…
From there I imparted him the importance of risk/benefits analysis and not act in a moment of impulse attrributing to ego or other reasons, always think before actions are made.
With the finishing of the session, I was given a formal introduction by
Mrs Xiao to the Children in the centre followed by supervision of the upper primary in revision/homework. I was bombarded by multiple personal/work related questions by the children, I was slightly nervous but by the fifth question (?) I became comfortable with them.
I feel connected with the Children and I know I had helped them gained an insight of the society/world that the school/teachers/peers weren't able to offer. They are not just children that I have to supervise work, they are my little friends now.

Surprisingly, i felt this immense satisfactory feeling I got from the end of each day, considering the amount of time I spent on travelling during rush hours and internal mental troubles I had to endure from time to time. I realise I wanted to do more to bring happiness to these children each day and give the greatest amount of value I could during this two weeks of “blessing in disguise”.
Being a responsible citizen means being there for other people, not just looking out for myself or for my friends. There's an endless form of ways a person could act as a responsible citizen: helping
someone in need, keeping your city clean and helping out a tourist with directions etc. But being responsible to me means reaching out beyond the call of duty to see what I can do. It's more than just doing my job because that's what I am expected to do. It's doing the unexpected to make this world a better place to live.
