One reason why having a physician assistant on a medical team is that physician assistants can provide nearly all of the clinical services a physician does. Physician assistants are skilled in general medicine certified as medical generalists with a groundwork in primary care. Physician assistants are medical providers who are trained and licensed to diagnose and treat illness and to prescribe and medication for patients. In primary care settings, Physician assistants can perform nearly all of the following services a physician can, such as, taking medical histories, performing physical exams, order and interpret exams, diagnose and treat illnesses. Physician assistants can also counsel patients and set fractures. In some cases, physician…

In today’s medical world the physician assistant career is one that is highly coveted and is predicted to continue to grow in the coming years. “As patients live longer and chronic illnesses grow more complex, health experts project a shortage of doctors and an even stronger demand for physician assistants” (New York Times, 2011). Physician assistants work as part of a medical team where they perform various tasks and it is rumored that they perform most of the doctor’s work. PAs have knowledge of most if not all of the medical procedures and responsibilities that doctors deal with and face on a daily basis. The significant difference between a physician…

My hometown of Williamston, is 28 miles from the closest (not-so) major city, of Greenville, North Carolina. Growing up in a rural, medically under-served community, I witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of health care inequalities. Physician Assistants (PA) are the key to providing adequate access in these areas, like the one I am from. They are integral members of rural communities and are on the front lines combating disparities caused by shortages of primary care providers. It is my passion and life's work to use my medical training and knowledge to provide critical care for those individuals who need it the most.…
Sounds pretty similar to the agency I work for but it sounds like you had a lot more training then we did. Oddly, I was never asked or told to shadow anyone however, I did have a few nurses shadow me. I asked these nurses about it and they told me they weren’t getting paid for their time and I thought that was a little bizarre. I’m guessing that many agencies do not pay people for training after hearing your experience was similar to…
As the role of the medical assistant, I would want to comfort the patient and answer any questions that he/she may have. In this case the patient is feeling abandoned, so I will explain that we were letting him/her rest and fully awaken before we let anyone in to see him/her. I would also let the patient know that his/her health is important and that the doctor will be in shortly to explain more. Also that the doctor will help him/her understand what he/she went through before he let the family into explain to them how they can help with intestinal cancer.…
When people hear “pre-medicine,” they think of majors like biology, chemistry, biomedical engineering, health sciences, and other popular majors. I chose chemistry as my major, not only because I wanted to stand out not blend in, but also because I am aware of my strengths and weaknesses. I have always performed better in chemistry than in biology. I prefer challenges and I love the way chemistry challenges me. I am going into freshmen year with the knowledge of the level of difficulty that my major encompasses. I need to remain focused and work hard in order to succeed and achieve a solid gap of at least 3.6 for admission to medical school.…
I have had the toughest time deciding what career path to choose, but I now believe that Medical Assisting is the best career path for me. Medical Assistants get to perform administrative and clinical duties under the supervision of a physician. Some of their duties include but are not limited to, recording patients’ medical history, preparing and maintaining examination rooms, collect blood, and authorize drug refills to pharmacies. A Medical Assistant can decide if they want to specialize in a particular area of interest if they choose.…

As a child, I always admired and respected men and women who served the United States in the Navy and armed forces. These positions required a lot of sacrifice which meant that only the strongest willed of them made it through. That will power seemed to distinguish them from other members of society, they were mentally and physically stronger. When it came time for me to look into applying for colleges, I looked for places that had good engineering programs, top tier educations, and a structured student campus life. Many universities had the former two requirements, however, very few had the latter requirement. While discussing college options with my computer engineering teacher, he recommended I look into the United States Naval Academy…

I have lived in the southwest my entire life, and I understand the unique medical disparities that and specific to this area of the country. In becoming a physician I hope to provide care to underserved populations similar to the population I was raised in, and be a vocal advocate for increasing access to medicine in rural areas. Specifically at the CU SOM I am interested in CU-UNITE, and the Rural Track programs. These programs fit with my goals of providing care to underserved populations, and I look forward to firsthand experience and being immersed in the community while providing care. Working in Mother/Baby Care I see firsthand the effect that lack of access to health care has on families. For instance, we frequently deal with mothers who have had scant or no prenatal care because they did not have the means of getting to a doctor. These cases often require intensive care, and thusly a costly bill when preventative measures could have been more effective and more manageable in cost. With new legislation will come a need for innovative techniques for providing quick, cost effective care. Allowing students to gain experience and help facilitate the coming changes, is what I hope to bring to these tracks and experiences.…
Understanding the full development of a treatment provides unique opportunities to educate patients and lead academic discovery at the same time. Since May 2015, I’ve been working in an optometry clinic while balancing leading various genomic research projects within the Kane Lab. While walking to class or waiting in line for food, I read about the genetic basis of eye pathologies, or various conditions that could be treated with Cannabis, which began to satisfy my need to combine research with my clinical work. Looking to further my research while continuing my path to medicine, I contemplated possible degrees that would allow me to achieve the ability to directly treat patients through my research. Deciding to pursue an MD degree was a decision…
