Reflective Essay: Entering Into The Fall Of High School
I, Kourtney Brooks, am writing to you in hopes that the decision of me being ineligible for financial aid due to not maintaining a cumulative GPA of 2.0 can be appealed due to extenuating circumstances. Entering into the spring semester, due to my performance in the Fall I knew there was a lot of work to be done. In the Fall, after being out of college for a few years I had to get acclimated to working and going to school full time, not to mention online schooling, which is something I hadn’t experienced before, but due to having to work to take care of myself I made the decision to try it because I know in order to truly excel in life I have to further my education. Nonetheless, I went into the spring semester a stronger student due to the mistakes in the semester that instilled the strength and …show more content…
I lost my little sister. I can’t begin to express the pain and the emptiness this makes me feel. She was my best friend; she looked up to me and wanted to be just like me. We were more than sisters, I was like her mother. Our bond was inseparable and now I am trying my best to accept what has happened and try and live life without the person who was my purpose for living. My entire life has changed. While grieving the loss of my sister, I was called on an emergency mission. I’m a part of the Army National Guard and I was selected to travel to Germany on a Security Mission. Of course this was a very tough time for me but I had to sacrifice what I was going through to protect and serve my country. Due to all of these extenuating circumstances it was difficult to perform as strongly as planned this semester, but to make my sister proud I still put forth as much effort as I could being the circumstances. I successfully completed and passed all of the classes this semester when sometimes giving up felt like the easiest thing to do. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to increase my cumulative GPA to

Throughout my years of high school I have always strived for the best grades that I could attain, and they didn’t come easy. There were plenty of distractions that had driven me off course. Whether it was long hours at practice, volunteering for my community, or having a part-time job, I couldn’t let these activities hinder my grades. This purpose had sprung in me, to not only strive in my extracurricular activities, but also my schoolwork. Balancing both school and additional activities wasn’t a simple task. This led me to many sleepless nights, in which I had to tutor myself on certain topics I was struggling on. This ranged from my hardest subject, to studying extra hours on my hardest class, and even simple topics that I needed extra work…

I am writing to appeal my current student aid suspension for the Fall 2013 semester. I am aware that this has taken place due to my college GPA and lack of attendance in classes. I have met with a student advisor and am currently taking steps to improve my careless behaviors and restart my process. In the times that I have become absent, I have been dealing with the changes of the Board of Social Services. They have changed many rules and regulations after the time I began in January of 2012. I am currently getting more information on what their dos and don’ts of this program with me being a student will or will not affect in future references. In this time I have also made out an action plan to improve and cautiously take on the next level. I have made the choice of retaking classes such as Math and English. I have declared a reasonable way to be in school and cooperate with the Board of Social Services, with that being said I have taken action and changed my major from Health Science-LPN Preparation to Pharmacy Technician. I will also be required to take fewer classes to avoid a collision with the criteria of the Board of Social Services. I have been trying to collaborate and make arrangements, and abide by the bylaws of the Social Services. They are strict, but I am willing to make a change in my passion to take on a new career field. I am not placing blame on them because I have been slacking and blowing off days in my time here as well. I can guarantee that I will not slack on any of my obligations for the Fall of 2013 and if there are any more ways to clean up my act and straighten out this mess I have created, I am always available for…

I still can recall the feeling of pure unadulterated fear, and even thinking about it now gives me that sense of dread that has become all too familiar. Every first day was slightly different, but they all had the same effect on me, the uncomfortable feeling of being on the chopping block. In four years, I have experienced the feeling of brand new faces staring at me with harsh, judgemental eyes 4 times, something most high schoolers have to endure only once, if at all. However, these four different educational institutions have brought more than just scholarly concepts into my mind. They have each bent and contorted me in ways that have forced me to learn to become inure. Each transfer required me to adapt and learn to make friends with people who were not…

The crowd was roaring and happily jumping from the intersection that just happened against the TCU. Everyone was ecstatic as the students waved their white towels and cheered on our team. Folding laundry or doing dishes caused her to be out of breath and this continued to get worse throughout the year. In 2012 we were finally able to get her to a doctor where they couldn’t even examine her trachea with a tiny camera because it was so blocked. She was instantly taken to the emergency room where they diagnosed her with subglottic tracheal stenosis. In the following years she had to endure a tracheotomy and nine surgeries that attempted to remove scar tissue and open her trachea. The recovery time for these surgeries was very extensive which meant that I had to care for the home and my mother while my father worked. I feel that this period of my life was when my character developed the most making me mentally stronger, caring, responsible, and eager to make the most of my life. Joining that Naval Academy would allow me to do just that, giving me an unlimited number of options to choose in order to succeed in life and make a difference. I worked extremely hard during that time to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.82. I kept up with all school work and the commitments I made to clubs, sports, and volunteer work. While most people would have given up and lost hope, I was determined to wake up everyday and do as much as I physically could to keep up with the rest of my peers. I wanted to still participate in high school and experience all it had to offer. After junior year, I dedicated ten weeks of my summer vacation to take two college courses. I achieved an “A” in both courses for an overall 4.0 GPA to start my college career. I took these, not just to get a taste of what college is like, but to make up for the time I missed in class during high school. I still wanted to learn as much as I could and seized every educational opportunity during my new found healthy life. With my treatment plan and the support from my family, I am able to live an active life and I am proud to say that I never let my illness stop me from living a successful…

From a young age we’re asked what we want to be when we grow up, never how we expect to become when we grow up. I was well aware of what I wanted to become, but not sure how to get there until I started high school when my counselor explained to me the importance of having a full portfolio with a wide range of extracurricular activities. Then it became clear to me, I needed extracurricular activities to become who I wished to be. Throughout my high school career I’ve participated in several extracurricular actives such as math club, soccer and UIL One Act. In the future, I want to participate in these activities or anything similar to those I participated in high school.…
