Reflective Essay: Immigration To The United States
Waking up in the morning and looking at the news, social media, and newspaper and realizing that we live in a world filled with judgments and stereotypes towards one another. Assisting a school near the border of Mexico, and the principal and teachers being Turkish has given me the opportunity to learn each culture clearly. Interacting with people from different countries has opened my eyes to see how wrong reporters, political candidates, and other people's opinions are amiss. Thought my high school years I became best friends with a girl from Afghanistan and another one from Mexico. My friend used to live in Mexico and she moved to the United States due all the delinquency and corruption in the country. When she first came to the United …show more content…
The day was going perfectly fine until one man shouted out of nowhere, ¨Get out of my country you Muslim, you probably have a bomb¨. How are you supposed to react to such a naive comment? How can a person talk to a teenager that way? I was furious. I had had enough of these comments and stereotypes, even though my friends told me to just ignore him, I could not ignore it any longer. I turned around and walked towards that man and and told him he had no right to talk to my friend or any other person that way. We live in a free country where everyone deserves to be treated equally, and you can not go around judging other people based on what they wear or what they believe in. Eventually they called security and took man outside. After the incident my friend thanked me and I decided that I was never going to ignore a comment like that. It is time we stand up for what we truly believe. We cannot let society label us, because stereotypes do not define who we are. Nobody should feel threatened, when they go to a public place nor scared of what might happen to them. I feel proud of myself for defending my friend and I would not hesitate to do it again. I have been silent for too long, I think it's time to speak up for myself and other

As a Muslim who has grown up in America I related to this article on so many levels. Even though racism exists and the world is full of ignorant people, you can't never truly grasp the idea until you're a victim of it. Around the time of the September 11 attacks, I went to the mall with my aunt who was wearing a hijab or a traditional Islamic covering. Every store we walked into the reactions were the same and the customer service horrible. Store clerks would just turn away instead of greeting or welcoming us to the store, you could see the discomfort and revulsion on their faces as they checked us out. This truly sadden me, and showedme how hateful and ignorant people were.…

Who’s to judge what’s harmless and what’s hurtful? Am I allowed to be offended when a friend jokes that the best diet is to be a bulimic with Alzheimer's, because you throw up and then forget about it, allowing yourself to purge yourself of impurities multiple times in a day! It’s having a discussion in your English class about a music video that glorifies and also mocks eating disorders, and watching, shocked, as a boy you thought of as sensible informs the girls of the class that they should not take so much offense to things. I always stand up against these misguided preachers, trying to educate on how sticks, stones, and words can all be painful, politely requesting that the next time they think twice before speaking. I stand up for my current self, my self those few years back who wasn’t strong enough, and I stand up for friends that are still searching for the courage to fight their stick thin demons and to stand with…

Words are powerful. They can harmless or harmful at the same time. People have to use words wisely. As an Asian, I’ve never experience people calls me “FOB” in China until I moved to America when I was 13 years old. I remembered that the first time I walked into the school; I was very nervous and excited at that time. As I walked past the classroom’s window, I heard people laughing and giggling at me while I was waving my hand at them. The school principal had led me into a classroom. I still remember that the classroom was as quiet as a graveyard. When I was sitting in…

First, looking at the discrimination of Muslims in the modern world. The population, not only in the United States but in other countries as well, go through extensive measure to “keep the country safe”. All these people are doing is calling out people because of the way they live/their race, what their beliefs are and what they do for a living. We always seem to double check on people who don't quite ‘look American’ or they look as though they are of a different ethnicity from what we believe is safe. Recently, some amount of Muslims have been accused of being a terrorist just because of their appearance. Just like in this first article where a college student who majors in terrorism, crime and global security. He was studying more on his major in a public library, when someone had noticed his appearance and decided that they should question him about his thoughts on…

Imagine people laughing at you, pointing at you, saying mean things to you, just because you are different. Things like this happen too much in this day and time. I am writing this story because this is serious topic. I was taught that this is a topic that we shall not take lightly. I have taken a honor code in sociology to help people who is dealing with something like this. This story is not meant to discourage anybody, but to open their eyes. This story, I hope, would emphasis the severity of this issue. Everybody's life is equally important than the rest. I seen too many of my friends and strangers who talks about how they contemplated this before. Too many innocent people have taken their lives because of someone else bigotry. If you the bigot, you should think hardly on what you said. You should not assume that everyone can take threats or abuse lightly. I hope you rethink this and find…

Although the exchange was short, this moment has stayed with me because there are many people in this world that are not knowledgeable or educated on ethnicity and race. Although my encounter was harmless, I can only feel awful for those that experience the worst kind. Those few minutes changed how I choose to react in future situations where others may respond with answers that I may not like or expect. Most people base their knowledge on different races and ethnicities by the stereotype that accompanies them, which is a major problem in today’s…

“Hate speech has no redeeming value, so we should never pretend it occupies a rightful spot in the marketplace of ideas or has anything to do with ‘rational debate’ ... Governments have a duty to protect citizens and reduce discrimination and violence...” (Arthur 29). When hate speech is constantly used, it comes to a point where it is Kafkaesque. It’s not the absurdity of hate speech alone, but the irony of the victims’ circular reasoning in reaction to it, and how they consistently allow it to occur. Instead of pushing for the rights to protect themselves from the downpour of rude remarks, the victims of hate speech simply ignore it or acknowledge that it is a problem that cannot be fixed, which it can. Through these dilemmas prevail that…

When I enrolled in this course we started out by writing a personal narrative that would describe our backgrounds and what we’re looking forward to learning or improving on during it. I wanted to write about the pipeline, it being a controversial topic, drew my interest in wanting to write an argumentative paper that would prove my stance. As I continued throughout the course I learned that it might not be a smart idea to write about it because I already had a stance to the issue making it harder for me to be able to reason with the opposing side and giving them the recognize that they deserve. I am a huge procrastinator when it comes to writing, just because of the uncertainty that I always get when starting an assignment. I was never sure…

In 2005 a popular television program south park aired an episode named “Ginger Kids” accusing those of the copper hair colouring as being disgusting, inhuman , unable to survive in sunlight and having no soul. This then led to a Facebook group naming 20th November “National Kick A Ginger Day”. No one batted an eyelid towards the page and it resulted in redheads in schools up and down the country being physically assaulted by other students who found the whole situation hilarious. In one incident ,at Wingfield Academy in Yorkshire, at least six ginger students were ambushed and battered on their way to classes. A father describes how his 13 year old daughter had came home with bruised legs after being singled out because of her auburn hair. No-one apart from the parents and the odd teacher showed any concern or sympathy towards these children. The majority of people laughed at the days events and now you can even buy commemorative mugs with the title “National Kick A Ginger Day” brandished on the front. But Had it been kick an asian day or kick a homosexual day the whole country would of been in an uproar, and anything relating to the day would have been investigated immediately…

At San Jose University, a student was attacked for wearing her hijab. There is only so much that can be done by administrations and authorities in order to protect student bodies. Great progress has been made, but the real solution to the issue is the students themselves. By acknowledging this racial intolerance as an issue, and refusing to let a stigma stemming from hate influence our thinking, our generation can eliminate an entire outdated way of thinking.…

At approximately 11:36 today we became aware of a situation where a student made an inappropriate comment about a school shooting. We immediately interviewed the students involved. The student admitted to making an inappropriate comment regarding shooting up the school, but emphasized it was only a joke and never meant any harm. The school has taken appropriate steps in dealing with the situation and wanted to make you aware. I want to reassure parents that we take any threat very seriously, and will always do everything possible to keep our students and our school safe, as it is at this moment. Please discuss these situations with your youth and inform them that in today's society, we simply cannot make jokes about violence in any way.…

Me and my friend were working on a detailed project that could be seen as the work of lazy men, but only if you really didn’t know that the preparation of that job was very tedious in measurements and not so simple mathematics. While Renee was working shoveling dirt he says “este gavacho no entiende que este jalle es por pendejos”. This translates to “this white guy doesn’t understand that this job is for the dumbasses”. Already aggravated by the hot sun of the mid-summer day, I snapped when I hear him and realized he wasn’t joking. First thing out of my mouth was “if you think I’m such a dumbass white guy, then let’s go behind the building and see how dumb this white kid really is beating your ass.” Renee’s only reaction was of jaw dropping silence. After he became defensive saying he was joking and it was all a misunderstanding of how he was using the words. I told him I knew exactly what he was saying and how. My mother-n-law who is from Mexico City told me certain expressions to look…

How would you like to be called names or even beat up because of you skin colour, religion, ethnicity, or beliefs? Imagine walking into a classroom everyone laughing at you, talking about you behind your back because of your race. Imagine not getting hired for a work because of you race. Imagine playing sport everyone singing negative chants about your race. Well this is happening everyday all around the world. But first let’s describe Racism. Racism is the discrimination of a person because of the race that they have inherited. Racism is very ugly. It divides people into ‘us’ to ‘them’ depending on there culture etc. its an extremely serious issue that faces society today yet people still think its cool to tease and even beat up a person because of their accent, because they aren’t good at something, their skin colour, their religion and culture. Being racist to someone can create negative and dangerous emotional responses. It does not only lead to social problems but racism also harms the victims but also to others. In most cases it causes the victim to feel depressed, angry, helpless and sad and then in severe cases in can escalate to suicidal. And the sad thing is in most severe cases suicides are usually carried out by very young teenagers. That’s a young teenager’s with their whole life ahead of them loss because a couple of people cant accept that they are a little different from them culturally, traditionally or even religiously? A common question that is asked from people all around the world is ‘If racism has such negative affects on people, then why are people racist?’ Many reasons come into my mind but the main reasons why I think people are racist is because they can’t accept people that are different from them, Another reason is unfamiliarity. Unfamiliarity can also lead to people to be racist. A lot of the times people say what they don’t understand. If people don’t grow up around a particular race and are told stereotypical things…
