Reflective Essay: Middle School
I still remember sitting on the bleachers anxiously waiting for my name to be called. I waited with hope up until the very end, yet my name did not get called. I had not made it to State again for National History Day for the third time in a row. All of my peers have advanced to the State level, but every year I would be faced with disappointment again. I cried feeling disappointed in myself. After all of my hard work failed again. I thought that I had failed. Year after year, throughout middle school, I would try again, taking criticism by the judges and using it to improve my new research project. I felt that somehow I was not as smart as my friends who had all advanced to State. But each year, there was a different theme, and another opportunity to try again.
One thing that I have never done was give up. Although I was frustrated and sad, when it was time to begin a new research I never hesitated to start again. I invested in History Day by staying after school every day, spending weekends at school, and researching over Thanksgiving and Christmas break. I remember losing track of time researching

I had poured my heart and soul out into researching and finally challenging myself to get out of my comfort zone. The previous three years I have opted to present my information in easy forms, such as writing a paper, and creating an exhibit board. This time was different. I challenged myself to create a documentary, which I avoided in the past because I felt intimidated by the complexity of it. Although I proved myself wrong when I discovered a new passion of mine, video editing. What I learned from this experience is that there is always room for improvement. I learned to never give up for what I loved. It taught me how to become a fighter. It took four years of late night research, tears, and frustration for me to realize that failing is fine, and failing is not the end of the

I still can recall the feeling of pure unadulterated fear, and even thinking about it now gives me that sense of dread that has become all too familiar. Every first day was slightly different, but they all had the same effect on me, the uncomfortable feeling of being on the chopping block. In four years, I have experienced the feeling of brand new faces staring at me with harsh, judgemental eyes 4 times, something most high schoolers have to endure only once, if at all. However, these four different educational institutions have brought more than just scholarly concepts into my mind. They have each bent and contorted me in ways that have forced me to learn to become inure. Each transfer required me to adapt and learn to make friends with people who were not…

I’ve never been good at very many things. In fact, I quit or failed almost everything I’ve been involved in pertaining to school or extracurricular activities. I wanted to accomplish something that my parents would be proud of but I didn’t have much motivation. It wasn’t until my freshman year that I decided to work harder to achieve something to be proud of; I was just waiting around for the success to come to me. I quickly learned that I wasn’t going to get anywhere that way.…

“You’ll never make it,” they all said, my boyfriend, family, teachers, and friends. It was like my life was already figured out for me, as if I didn’t have a say. The message was loud and clear. They all expected me to fail, to settle for a minimum wage paying job, to settle for just a high school diploma. For a while I went around believing that all I could do was the minimum required. But then I realized that I was capable of doing so much more. As time went on I realized that I did not have to live up to other’s low expectations and I started making a name for myself. I knew that studying a little harder for every test, joining clubs, volunteering, and running for leadership positions would later pay off.…

Being a big sister I have always been introduced into the basics of how to take care a children. For my senior project I chose the self-development option where I took a class at WITC on “Intro to Child Care.” The class had a Pass/Fail grading system. I decided to take the class as my senior project to expand my prior knowledge on childcare. Also I took the class to determine if I want to pursue a career in childcare so I would know what colleges to go to and what programs I would need to pursue. The initial goals I had before starting the class were to complete the class, to expand my knowledge and to decide whether or not to pursue childcare as a career.…

I have learned much in my 11 years in California public school. I learned to write in cursive; I learned my times tables; I learned the equation for a line, and I learned a thing or two about Shakespeare. However, the most important thing I learned is that is that the Common Core doesn’t work. The Common Core Standards Initiative is an approach to keep all American students on the same page. The problem is that it keeps all of us on page 1. In my AP Calculus BC class, my 13 classmates and I are piloting a Common Core textbook. At first, everyone was excited to try something new, but now we groan at the sight of the textbook. While I passed the AP test for the first year of Calculus, it has been a challenge “reviewing” these concepts in the new style. Why change a system that was proven to be successful? California, one of the last states to implement Common Core, actually made a change for the worse. Therefore, I strongly believe that the 28th amendment to the Constitution should be the nationwide abolishment of Common Core.…

As nervous as I was when I walked into Saint Joseph Catholic School (K-8) for my first day of kindergarten, I never thought I would be able to leave after 6th grade and enter the world of middle school. In a small school of about 400 kids, I was familiar with every face that passed by me in the hallway. I got to know the kids in my grade so well and we all knew each other’s life stories. By the time I was in 6th grade at Saint Joseph, some of my friends were planning on going to Kinard middle school in 7th grade. At this point in my life, I was not completely content with where I was going to school. The realization came to me that it was time to move on. It was time for me to try something new.…

Throughout my years involved in 4-H, I participated in projects such as showing cattle and sheep, and creating projects in areas such as food and nutrition, home improvement, sewing and clothing. 4-H projects were a big part of the experience because I was challenged to work on them throughout the entire year, so I could display my hard work at the fair. Within my club, I was actively involved from an early age. Growing up with a grandpa who was a previous 4-H Club leader, being involved was important in my family. With the support of my family and friends, I achieved my goal to be the Story County Fair Queen my junior year. After serving as the vice president of my club that same year, I was elected to be president my senior year. Considering we had a very young club at the time, I was able to be a leader and role model for the younger members. I have also continued to be involved in 4-H since graduation by helping with the Fair Queen Pageant, and helping check in lambs at the sheep show.…
