When I first learned about the holocaust in the fifth of sixth grade, I became very interested in that point in history. Night, a story about a young boys struggles and his will to persevere was my favorite summer reading book. Reading Elie story was very inspirational for me because I felt connected to him. Reading his story from his point of view made the book so much more interesting. Night made me feel more self aware because of how many things Elie needs to overcome. This bookw is about Ishmael’s childhood living in civil war. He tells about how he had to hide from rebels and then eventually having to join the war because he is all alone. Ishmael is eventually taken from the war and sent to a rehabilitation center where he eventually is able to go back to a normal life. He moves on from the war and becomes an Idol to others. One of my favorite quotes from this book, “ I was also pleased to have met people outside of Sierra Leone. Because if i was to get killed upon return, i knew that a memory of my existence was alive somewhere in the world.” (Beah 200). This quote impacted me because Beah is saying even if he were to die tomorrow he would be ok with that because he knows that people have an understanding of what he went through in Sierra Leone. This book made me self aware of the world around me because in countries like Iraq and Iran are in war right now. A Long Way Gone made me think of how I am lucky to be able to live in a place that isn’t taking place in a civil
