I could either take the easy way out, or embrace the challenge of a more difficult schedule. The choice was not a hard one; I decided to work toward the full IB diploma. I pursued the full diploma because I wanted to challenge myself, learn more, and get the best education possible. For example, I used math to find that baseball players’ hits have a greater effect on their salary than homeruns. I also conducted an science experiment, in which I found that water is cleaner on the west coast than on the east coast.
I’ve also enjoyed pursuing the IB extended essay in history. I researched how the death of Len Bias, a star college basketball player, affected drug policies in the United States. I learned how Bias’s death exposed the problems of drug abuse in the United State which led to sweeping drug reforms. I was fascinated to learn that somebody with no political background could have such a great influence on lawmaking.
By working toward the full IB diploma, I have learned that I can be most successful by challenging and pushing myself to the limit. If I would have taken a less challenging course load, I wouldn’t have been able to take advantage of the unique opportunity provided to me by St. Paul’s.
