The most defining moment in my JSA career thus far was getting my bill passed at Winter Congress. In my previous debate experience, I had never had the opportunity to write my own bill and debate it in front of an audience. I love how JSA allows students to explore their own political interests and debate about what they are passionate about. I was very interested in climate change, so I decided to write and present a bill to combat climate change
for Winter Congress. Writing this bill was an experience I had never had before. At first, I didn’t want to join JSA at all, let alone write a bill for fun, but my friend Emily Shen, the NES Convention Coordinator, was there to encourage and guide me throughout the entire process. After thoroughly researching and writing the bill, not only did I learn more about climate change, but I also felt more confident going into the debates at Winter Congress. After telling me more about how she started out as a logistics agent at previous state conventions and was now on regional cabinet, Emily made me realize that JSA was something that I wanted to pursue and dedicate myself in as well.
I want to be able to provide my school with more opportunities regarding JSA, so that other students can have the same experience I had, as my school doesn’t fully participate in all JSA events at the moment. As part of JSA, I want to become that role model and just be there for others who are new to JSA like I was, and provide them with the same guidance and opportunities Emily provided me with. I realize now that I would have never wanted to attend Winter Congress or enjoyed JSA as much as I did without her support. Participating in Winter Congress also motivated me to explore the realm of politics, debate, and public speaking even more. This past summer, I attended a parliamentary debate camp at the Dartmouth Debate Institutions. It was an experience like I would have never imagined, and I realize that it was all through participating in JSA that motivated me to want to strengthen my background and expand my debate career even more.
