Reflective Essay: What Affects The Writing Process
Reflective Essay At the beginning of the semester, we started out with a small assessment on writing perspectives, and how it affects our writing process. The short video had a number of students, talking about how they hate writing and why (YouTube. Zabielski). At that time, I did not agree with the students on the video, and thought the only problem I had in my writing process, was time management. Of course, that is one of the reasons I decided to take English 102 online; it saves time and allows the student to create a strong, ingenuous, persona. Typically, I do most of my reading and writing online and considered myself to be advanced. Unfortunately, throughout the coursework we have we have complete so far, I realized I still had a lot to learn and my writing process could defiantly use some critiquing.
Regrettably, one of the first things I learned starting Unit One, was I don’t read directions very well. Consequently, by skimming through the assignment instructions, I wasted valuable time that could have been spent on other projects, and could have been easily prevented had I taken the skills check before I started the assessments. Another, issue I have had in the past was Writing with Different Rhetoric Strategies. I always struggled to remember which one was which, but after completing the Unit Three Assessments,

Regrettably, I choose not to turn it in as a rough draft, because at the time I don’t think I could have endured the negative feedback it would have aroused. However, I am pleased with my sentence variety and structure and feel like I managed to complete the assignment with a good level of understanding of what was asked, by choosing a topic that I enjoy talking about, “Fear” Also, I cited all my sources to such an extent, that it would be over-kill to repeat them on my reflection

Truth be told, it’s been a few years since the last time I walked into a writing extensive course like English 1302. The last time that I sat in front of a computer, and slaved away for hours trying to create the perfect paper was in 2011, during my first semester at Texas Tech. It was English 101, and people had that it’s a class that I should not take lightly, but of course I thought I knew better. Let’s just say that I figured out, I was not the greatest writer in the world after all, but high school definitely made me think I was. Before I entered into my first semester of college level English, it was not unordinary for me to write a paper that received applause from teachers all the way through senior year. I wrote essays on books, such as the “The Great Gatsby” to critically breaking apart poems. One assignment that I remember vividly was my critical summary over Robert Frost’s Poem, “The Road Less Traveled”. Alas, those easy days are gone. Most of my time now is spent typing up emails to staff and teachers. Since I have been enrolled at Texas Tech, I have worked in Texas Tech’s School of Law in the Administrative Office. Much my work is behind a screen typing up emails. It has taught me a lot, so I feel as though I’ve become pretty proficient when it comes to writing up formal messages or relaying information in a professional way. I believe that I have a decent amount of experience when it comes to my writing abilities, and hopefully that will continue to grow throughout my time in this class.…

This class has taught me many things about myself along with many necessary skills needed while writing. I know now that, through hard work and determination, I can achieve what I might think to be impossible. While reflecting back on my initial writing abilities, I see the weak, uneducated style of writing. Each essay shows my progression and improvement, and, after a while, the class began to become much easier. Today, after practicing throughout my essays this semester, I believe that I, in fact, have…

By utilizing four steps, I can effectively write an essay on the topics assigned during this program (Bethel, 2015). The first step is developing a clear point and is followed by supporting ideas. I plan to use quick notes to get my ideas down and make sure I need them. Next I need to organize my ideas to explain how I arrived at my thesis. Finally, I need to proofread my writing to omit any grammar or writing mistakes. These steps can help my writing be more concise and improve over time.…

I have learned that revising your writing makes it way better than before. You find your mistakes and realize you can replace words such as “bring to” to a different high vocabulary word such as “cease”. I know now that there is no way to make your paper perfect. There will always be a word, words, or sentence you could change. In addition, I’ve gained a better understanding on passive and active sentences. Once I was done writing my paper, and began to reread it I found some passive sentences. All I did was revise the sentence which helped my writing flow better. Initially, I read the first paper I wrote for the Quarter 1 Writing Assessment and I noticed that I didn’t follow the directions completely. As I read on, there were many simple sentences and not many transitional words.…

Throughout my writing experience I have always struggled with my body paragraphs. I tend to always have a strong introduction but once I began to go into my first body paragraph I lose my train of thought. One of my main issues is that I get to wordy. Which then leaves me with fragments. Lastly, which I’m sure most people have an issue with is basic grammar errors such as, spelling and placing commas. I feel that my writing has had a small progression. Through this class I have learned more writing techniques that have helped me as a writer.…

Throughout this semester I have received a lot of input and criticism on my essays from my TA, my professor and fellow students. This semester I was fortunate to receive quick, fairly reliable, built in feedback. From the feedback that I have received by taking this class I believe that I have become a better writer as it was beneficial for the most part. Feedback that I received from my fellow students was occasionally helpful. It typically varied from week to week. One week I would write a paper and get a ton of markings and criticism on it which was helpful because I was able to see what I did wrong and I would rarely have to get it proof read another time. Other times I would turn in a paper and it would come back with few markings and comments. This felt almost like a waste of time because I knew that I had more mistakes that I did not catch earlier. Because of this I would have to go out of my way and someone else would have to go out of their way to get it proof read again, or I would risk handing in the good copy with mistakes. One thing that I appreciated from peer evaluation days was that was able to see what worked in my paper, what did not and what I need to improve on.…

Writing a piece of persuasive writing and bringing it through the writing process until publication has taught me so much about myself as a writer, nonfiction writing, and being a teacher of writing. Gillespie (1985) explained that only when teachers are writers can they truly teach writing, and throughout my writing process, I was able to think of various lessons that I could teach my students based upon my writing.…

Over the course of this year in English, I think my writing process has excelled the most along with my overall writing. In the past, I have used similar techniques to develop a final essay, but, this year, I have begin to rely more heavily on planning out and slowly chipping away at my essays and papers. I believe also that because of this planning the strength of my writing as a whole has grown. Personally, I do not think that I grew in my vocabulary usage. Overall this year, I grew as a writer in ways that I would not have predicted.…

A thorough analysis of my experience in Writing 101 taught me many things. A major takeaway from this class is never to overestimate my abilities. While taking this course, I was also trying to handle two other classes, a full-time job, and a hormonal teenager. I feel I personally overestimated my abilities. Prior to taking this course I did not have a strong background in writing or English for that matter. I honestly feel writing is my weakest subject. I know I will have to retake this course. When I do retake the class, I will undoubtedly ensure I do not have any other distractions. I must take this course as a stand-alone class. I also will make certain this be a face to face course. I feel the lessons in this course are exquisite. However, I should have asked for help sooner. I now…
